A landmark legal win for Palestinian solidarity activists concerning the right to freedom of speech and expression. South Africa’s constitutional court rejected the allegation that criticisms of Israel amount to hate speech and anti-Semitism.
The Court emphasised the importance of "the expert evidence in relation to the fine nuances between anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist tropes." Accordingly, the court determined that only 1 of the 4 statements fulfil the criteria of anti-Semitism, distinguishing it from anti-Zionism.
"[T]he Supreme Court of Appeal found that Judaism and Zionism were not synonymous, and that the impugned statements did not connote religion or ethnicity, but only represented political speech that was made in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict." #EndIsraelsApartheid
