This is an incredible accomplishment. I don't think many outsiders realize how incredible.
Lets also note that there is no vaccine mandate here.

This is simply a health care system focused on evidence based results, and providing the vaccine as quickly and easily as possible...and a public that trusts them enough to take the shot.

I for one question if the number is really 80% (my guess it is closer to 60-65%) but still, given the immensity of the task, impressive.
India has administered 1.8 BILLION (yes, BILLION) doses of the vaccines so far.

Lets recall that earlier last year, before vaccines got really moving, the tragedy of loss was incredible.

This number may be a lowball estimate. Other estimates I've seen put the number closer to 5 million.

Trudeau et al are exceptionally stupid. They knew the convoy was coming long before it showed up.
Even after they got to Ottawa, they could have physically removed them. It would not have been painless, but it would've been defensible.

Their actions now are not defensible.
Lot of Americans may not realize this...but public sentiment of Canadians are with Trudeau. Even the majority of truckers support shutting down the convoys.

But somehow, someway, Trudeau is still losing the fight.

This is why the Supreme Court was right to rule that the power to spend is the power to speak.

Citizens United was the correct decision.
If the government can shut down your income, your banks, your saved wealth, and financial assistance because the politicians don't support your message...you don't really have free speech.

You just have the mirage of it.

Free speech means you defend SPEECH YOU DON'T LIKE.
Again, this is all so stupid.

If Canada wants to remove the truckers, forcibly...remove them. They absolutely have the legal right to do so.

They simply are too cowardly to pay the 'political costs' involved.

I'm not sure what exactly Trudeau is going to do here that they couldn't do before.
"The Emergencies Act outlines four different types of emergencies: public welfare emergencies, public order emergencies, international emergencies and war emergencies. If the legislation is invoked this week, it will likely be under the 'public order' category."
"Again, the criteria here is strict - lawful protests do not qualify.

Instead, the situation must be considered a threat to the security of Canada, as defined by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act."

Anyone want to defend vaccine mandates?

Mandates made sense when:
1. Vaccines obviously save lives, which is still true today.
2. Vaccines virtually stopped transmission...WHICH IS NOT TRUE TODAY.

Point #2 really is important, and Fauci/Walensky don't want to answer it.
Lets stipulate point #1. There is no question that vaccines save lives, and everyone should choose to get vaccinated for their own sake.

Agreed?
Here is the problem: the real benefit of mandates, as stated by Biden himself, is to protect SOCIETY.

But in the age of Omicron, that isn't really the major benefit of vaccines. Vaccinated individuals were only marginally less likely to get infected and transmit the virus.

This is 100% correct.

There is scientific reason to have a govt enforced mandate. If you feel you need to mask, do so.
A thread worth reading. Ashish is more pro-school mask than I am, but I think he is also approaching this reasonably.

I think masks work in kids. I also think mask MANDATES in schools have had only very limited benefit, even at peak surges, when you look at the data. I believe the benefit is greater than zero, but it so far is not shown to be statistically significant.

So, I fully support ending mask mandates, etc. Why? Because there is little to no evidence the mandates work.

But for politicians like @GovMurphy, @GovKathyHochul, @GovNedLamont, etc...stop the BS. This is not because the science changed.

Its because the politics changed.
Lets look at the data. Where on this chart would you choose to end mandates?

???

Case numbers are higher now than any time in 2020 or 2021.
Look at this chart.

Does this make ANY sense, considering their past arguments for mandates???

The answer is clearly NO.
