Somehow, it's already the end of our second week at @boltsmag, and it's all still too new & dreamlike — so I'm going to do another thread of our stories out this week for you to catch up if you've missed on. ↓↓
1️⃣ Is one of the nation's main capital punishment strongholds in for a reckoning? A DA candidate in Las Vegas told @SamMellins for the first time that he'd never seek the death penalty if elected. Probably the biggest election for death penalty this year. boltsmag.org/nevada-da-cand…
2️⃣ Last year, @celeste_trusty was advocating to lower incarceration in Pennsylvania. Last month, she became the secretary of the state's Board of Pardons, appointed by @JohnFetterman. And she vows to continue pushing to broaden clemency. A powerful Q&A: boltsmag.org/pennsylvania-p…
3️⃣ Oregon casts itself as a voting right pioneer, but it won't be catching up to Maine, Vermont, and D.C. this year: Legislation to abolish felony disenfranchisement there won't pass this year -- but the debates @alex_zee reports on are very interesting. boltsmag.org/prison-voting-…
4️⃣ This is 🥴 : "Stop the Steal" activists are trying to oust a powerful judge in TX on March 1. That judge... wouldn't even say who won the 2020 election when @michaelsbarajas asked him, but he's not enough for the right.

A big one to watch in 10 days: boltsmag.org/stop-the-steal…
5️⃣ Yesterday there was a starting voting rights implosion in New Mexico that derailed rights restoration, automatic registration, & protection for Native voters.

Boosting voting rights has to mean looking at what's going awry in those state battles: boltsmag.org/voting-rights-…
Next week is the final stretch before the Texas primary, so we'll be focused on the state! And we have utmost Texas expert @michaelsbarajas to guide this!

AND... stay tuned for the big return of What's on the Ballot: its first cheat sheet since it joined @Boltsmag!

It's the end of our first week at @BoltsMag, & I'm so proud of what we have put out in the world already (& of sharing everything that we have in store).

Here's a thread of the 8 stories & pages we published this week on boltsmag.org (before I sleep all weekend). ↓
1️⃣ Trump's Big Lie has put local election admin on hot seat. But it's so extraordinarily difficult to get your bearings on what offices matter where, & this is a big problem as Bannon builds up its takeover strategy. So @yeargain built a unique database: boltsmag.org/the-mosaic-of-…
2️⃣ The database itself is available here, & it's really so rich. I myself learned so much talking about it with @yeargain over the past two months, & it opens up so many ideas for further work. Check out the landscape in your state, at least! boltsmag.org/whats-on-the-b…

We’re focusing on digging into two broad areas where local institutions are so crucial: criminal justice & voting rights.

It’s been amazing to work with @michaelsbarajas on this, and I’m so excited by our first crop of our pieces!

In a big decision, NC's Supreme Court just struck down the GOP gerrymander, 4-3.

Had Dems not won the 2018 Supreme Court race, this would have gone the other way.

2018 is the year that... the GOP tried to rig the election, only to have it spectacularly backfire. Let's recap.
Heading into 2018, the GOP wanted Justice Barbara Jackon (R) to win. It pushed a series of changes to ensure that.

1—It cancelled judicial primaries just for 2018
2—It changed ballot order rules
3—It added partisan ID on ballot

(All these things will soon conspire against them.
Why did they think this helps? Well: Incumbent is a Republican, but it'll be hard for Dems to coalesce around 1 challenger. With primaries cancelled this year, this would mean a November race with one R & multiple Ds. Add partisan ID on ballot, & GOP wins.

(=This is the theory.)

Huge blow to Dems in Wisconsin, somewhat expected given the GOP-majority court is among the most polarized in the country.

The ruling's effect is that the HEAVILY gerrymandered maps the GOP drew for 2010s will carry into the 2020s, no matter the veto power Dems gained in 2018.
Wisconsin's 2019 Supreme Court race, held far (far) from the national spotlight in the spring of 2019 and which the GOP-aligned candidate carried by 5921 votes (out of 1.2 million) will loom very large when it comes to deciding national power thru this coming decade.
Note these developments should not be not surprises. We know (and should know better) that these local & state elections matter & will have momentous consequences when they're happening.
