1. The ONLY reason @OttawaPolice acted at all was because thousands of residents stood up and were organizing against the far-right in our city and calling out their complicity with the occupiers.
We proved that WE keep each other safe not police. 2/8
2. This was not a peaceful protest nor did it "turn into a far-right protest."
I'm not saying every single occupier was directly implicated but many especially the leaders were directly involved in hateful, racist and homophobic movements from the very BEGINNING 3/8
3. This does not end here. The far right has and will continue to grow.
One of the only ways to combat this is for governments to put in place measures that ACTUALLY help people like bringing back CERB, paid sick days, removing the TRIPS waivers on vaccines, etc. 4/8
4. This has spoken to the need to build local, anti-fascist organizing.
Electoral politics is important but what is also necessary if not more important is for people to get involved in building skills for direct action like the #BattleofBillingsBridge and mutual aid. 5/8
5. @CPC_HQ has been complicit in enabling and coddling the far right to take over #Ottawa.
The very nature of what the occupiers were pushing was not pro-worker. In fact, for weeks, convoy supporters harassed and terrorized workers by not following public health guidelines and violently threatening them. 7/8
To everyone I organized with throughout this whole terrible ordeal - thank you and to everyone in different cities who want to talk about organizing against the far-right please reach out.
Our work isn't done yet by a long shot. 8/8
Sorry last but important point I forgot is that this also speaks to the need of PEDESTRIANIZING the whole downtown core so that we can stop things like this happening again and make sure our streets are for people not cars or trucks.

I know a lot of people are angry and frustrated especially those of us who live downtown who are seeing our city torn apart by people who could not care less about the community that lives here but we really have to keep in mind keeping people safe 1/6🧵
It's important to keep in mind that although some of them aren't violent many in the convoy ARE like this man Alex Vriend, a Canadian neo-nazi who is presently there, people like Alex are LOOKING for a confrontation and violence. 2/6
I have seen folks announce that they are planning a counter-demonstration and although I agree something like that has its place this might not be the right time - this can cause even more danger, especially for those most at risk. We need to listen to what they're saying. 3/6
Just came back from a walkthrough with a friend from the #Ottawa truck convoy. About ten minutes into our walk, we were yelled at and physically threatened just for wearing our masks.
The streets are bare and trucks are parked everywhere even in the middle of the road. 1/5
They've overtaken our city and have made life difficult for people who actually live here.
Let's be clear on what this is: this is a right-wing occupation of our city. They have millions of dollars and have said again and again that they're not leaving any time soon. 2/5
And @OttawaPolice are not going to speed up their time of departure either - if they could they already would have.
This is a "movement" that supports police (as you can see) and as we've seen evidence of this weekend many police in #Ottawa support them too 3/5
