It’s Sunday evening and I’m two whiskeys deep.

A few thoughts and hard truths (on just about everything):
Most of your friends aren’t really your friends.

They’re just along for the ride when it’s fun, convenient, or valuable.

Your real friends are the ones who are there for you when its none of those things—there for you when you have nothing to offer in return.

Cherish them.
The biggest thing holding most people back is their unwillingness to ask for what they want.

Closed mouths don’t get fed.

If you want something—and you’ve done the work to deserve it—ask for it.

Worst case—you’re told no.

Best case—it’s yours.
Everyone wants hacks or shortcuts, but there’s literally no such thing.

If anyone tries to sell you one, you should run as fast as you can.

The only “hack” is brutal, relentless consistency.

It’s not glamorous—and it may not be fun—but damnit it works.
The difference between moderately-successful people and extremely-successful people is that the latter legitimately enjoy being wrong.

They embrace new information that forces them to change their viewpoints.

They really enjoy it.

Open mindsets rule the world.
The world is run by common people with uncommon resolve.

We’re made to believe that the most successful people are built different—but it’s just not true.

They’re ordinary people with extraordinary determination—firm, unwavering determination to achieve what they set out to do.
It’s so much easier to be kind, optimistic, and positive—and it’s MUCH more profitable.

People want to do business with people they like.

Being kind is a legitimate competitive advantage—it also leads to more luck.

No one wants to be around toxic people—they’re the anti-luck.
The most successful people in the world are:

(1) Self-aware
(2) Strategic
(3) Ruthless

Self-aware to determine their unique edge relative to the world.

Strategic to set the table in a way that uniquely favors that edge.

Ruthless to exploit that edge on the table they set.
You can win by just getting back up—over and over and over again.

Every team needs someone who gets knocked the hell out, only to get back up and attack.

It’s scary to fight someone like that. You never want to be in the ring against a person who just keeps getting back up.
Brevity > Eloquence

Eloquence may have worked in Shakespeare’s era, but brevity is everything in ours.

99% of cold emails or DMs get deleted or ignored because they are too long.

Learn to write short, concise, punchy copy and you’ll always find a way to win.
When someone is going through a terrible time, saying “I’m with you” is the only thing that matters.

Advice, perspectives, or offers to help are minimally impactful.

The notion that someone is with you is 10x more powerful.

Be a “darkest hour friend” to those you love.
Stop assuming that historical failure implies future failure.

The most transformative companies were built because entrepreneurs refused to accept that historical failure implied certainty of future failure.

Past success doesn’t imply future success; the same goes for failure.
Everyone will give you advice, but most of it is utter crap.

It’s not ill-intentioned—we just only view life through our own experiences, so most sweeping advice misses the mark.

Learn how to filter through the noise, ignore the nonsense, and apply the useful stuff.
Most of us need to stop focusing on the finish and start focusing on the process.

You’ll never make it if the view at the summit is the only thing motivating you to keep climbing.

You have to find a way to love the process—to enjoy laying each individual brick.
People get rich by finding asymmetries and exploiting them.

Asymmetries have low downside and high or uncapped upside.

If you play those games consistently, you’ll win.

You can engineer asymmetry—your expertise in a given area may make a situation uniquely asymmetric for you.
You can go far in life by just being someone that people enjoy having around.

There are countless multi-millionaires who never built anything of note—they were just around people who did and created value in unassuming ways.

Sometimes it really does pay to be pleasant and kind.
Mental models are completely useless without application.

Everyone loves to read about mental models of the greats—Bezos, Musk, Buffett, etc.

The reality: reading about it is useless if you don’t put in the work to apply it.

Put yourself in the arena. Battle test everything.
The mute button is the most underrated tool on Twitter.

I know a lot of people who block liberally, but I think mute is much more useful.

Blocking gives the cynic a win—“I got them to block me!”

Muting removes their bad faith cynicism from your life without them knowing it.
Calling someone by their name is the easiest way to stand out.

It’s a lost art that never goes out of style.

When you meet someone, make a point to remember their name—say it back to them in conversation so it sticks.

It shows presence—and people love hearing their own name.
Ok, I had a third whiskey halfway through and this probably needs to wrap up now before I go off the rails…

Oh, and here was my poison of choice for tonight—Blood Oath No. 7.

A bit of a splurge purchase to celebrate the 500K milestone. Delicious and well worth it!

This first line of this tweet was poorly worded, as a few people noted.

There are many bigger things holding people back that are out of their control.

The real point was that if you want something and deserve it—ask for it!
It’s Monday morning and I’m one large Dunkin Donuts cold brew deep.

Hope everyone enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Waiting on that whiskey sponsorship to kick in so I can avoid going broke on these bottle purchases. It’s a business expense, right?!
Maybe I’ll write a book called “Two Whiskeys Deep”—make it the anti-self-help book (which paradoxically may be the ultimate self-help book).

Too many ideas, too little time…

How to Create More Luck:
I believe that much of what we call "luck" is the macro result of 1,000s of micro actions.

Your habits put you in a position where luck is more likely to strike.

If you want to create more luck, start by increasing your luck surface area.

This thread shares 20 ways to do it:
Get in the Arena

There's no luck on the sidelines—the arena is where it strikes.

It's lonely and vulnerable, but it's the only path that bears real fruit.

When faced with two paths, choose the path that puts you in the arena—where collisions happen, where luck can strike.

How Mark Zuckerberg lost $30 billion in one day…

I called my shot on CNBC after the Facebook name change that they had more fundamental problems. I asked our team to check the tapes—which are included in this clip.

Fun moment walking through the situation with @nikitabier!

I’ve been searching for ways to get more focused and efficient with my time…

Here’s one simple productivity trick I’ve discovered:
I spent most of my 20s having zero respect for my own time.

I would accept every meeting request, take every call, and attend every function.

There was a plus side to this—saying “yes” to a lot of things expands your luck surface area.

But in my 30s, it no longer makes sense…
I began to realize I needed to push for efficiency, leverage, and focus.

This would mean saying no more often.

The problem? Identifying what to cut and what to prioritize in a schedule can be really challenging.

Here’s the tactical method I developed that helped me do it:

I think a lot about lessons I learned on the field and how they apply to business and life.

Here’s an important one on mistakes and focus:
In college, the pitchers had to log how many “compound mistakes” we made in a game.

A “mistake” was a walk, hit batter, or error. Basically something where you—or the team—screwed up.

A “compound mistake” occurred if you failed to get the next batter out following a mistake.
When you look at the data, it turns out it’s hard to give up a lot of runs if you avoid compound mistakes.

The takeaway is simple: leave the past mistake in the past and focus on getting the next batter out.

That’s what’s in your control—that’s what impacts the outcome.
