Today's #BlackHistoryMonth Spotlight, we are recognizing Board Member Michael E. Carn, Mayor of the City of Oakland Park. At the December 2, 2015, meeting, the Oakland Park City Commission appointed Michael E. Carn as City Commissioner.
In a Special City Election on March 15, 2016, Mayor Carn was elected to complete the unexpired term of Shari McCartney, who resigned in October 2015. He was re-elected on November 6, 2018.
Mayor Carn is a resident of Oakland Park. His family moved to the Lakeside Estates community in 1963. The community was annexed into Oakland Park in the 1970s. Mayor Carn is a graduate of the Oakland Park Local Government Academy and served as president of his 2010 class.
He also served as chair of the Oakland Park Main Street Board and volunteered on the City's Census 2010 Committee.
Mayor Carn graduated from Boyd Anderson High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Tennessee State University in 1982.
He returned to Oakland Park after a 10-year electrical engineering career with Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles, California. Upon returning, Michael founded the DATABRIDGE Corporation, a computer, and systems engineering consulting firm that he led for 20 years.
He is currently the President and CEO of MetroBroward Economic Development Corporation, a not-for-profit financial institution that provides early-stage loans to entrepreneurs in Broward. Thank you, Mayor Carn, for your leadership and service on our board. #BHM2022#BlackHistory
