Good morning from Kyiv. Explosions heard by NPR correspondents here and in Odesa and Kharkiv.

Wi-Fi and cell service as well as electricity seem to be holding up.
Someone approached us here and asked if we heard explosions. When we said yes, he appeared bewildered. “Here? In Kyiv?!”
NPR correspondent @langfittnpr hears explosions and jets above in Odessa, says traffic is building here at 6am and lines building at gas stations
Explosions are still being heard here in Central Kyiv. Very nervous energy around… very hard to describe but people are walking and moving and talking with a deep anxiety… haltingly and out of breath
Biden has just gotten off phone w Zelensky Image
Biden: “Tomorrow, I will be meeting with the Leaders of the G7, and the United States and our Allies and partners will be imposing severe sanctions on Russia.”
As Zelensky imposed martial law across the country he urged citizens not to panic.

“We are strong,” he said, adding, “glory to Ukraine.”

In a statement the Ukrainian defense minister said that the country’s military defenses would hold
"Warn your loved ones about what is happening. Take care of those who need help. All thoughts and prayers are with our soldiers. Glory to Ukraine!" writes the Ukrainian president this morning. It is 9 a.m. here in Kyiv.

One Ukrainian told me she couldn’t believe that this day has come.

Not because she didn’t think that it was possible, but didn’t want to believe it was possible.
Morning to all those on the American east coast waking up to news about war in Ukraine.

A very eerie, calm scene in central Kyiv today as many have left the city heading west
Joined Morning Edition right now, like many others in Kyiv, from a line at a gas station.

Many trying to leave the city. Long lines at pharmacies and markets.

And we got this message from an ATM today, which saw long lines all day: Image

Biden says Russia is trying to provoke Ukraine in the Donbas, and pushing out disinformation

"It defies basic logic to believe the Ukrainians would choose this moment... to escalate"
Biden says what is happening in Ukraine is in alignment with the pretext arrangements that the U.S. has been warning about

Biden says they believe the Russians will target the city of Kyiv

The NRA's revenue has HALVED since 2018, the high-water mark of the organization before it began its decline

A series of important stories from @StephenGutowski and The Reload this morning:

thereload.com/exclusive-nra-…
@StephenGutowski NRA also spending 20% of its expenses on legal fees, more than 10x what it spends on education/training/community engagement combined

One could argue that its morphed from a 2A org to one fighting desperately to keep Wayne LaPierre in power

thereload.com/exclusive-nra-…
@StephenGutowski Brian Mittendorf warns of an NRA death spiral:

"Drastic declines in spending on core operations create the potential for a revenue ‘death spiral’ in which cuts in core programs scare off members, which in turn necessitates further cuts... can be hard to reverse.”

Florida state health officer put on administrative leave for encouraging own public health employees to get vaccinated

“I am sorry but in the absence of reasonable and real reasons it is irresponsible not to be vaccinated,” he wrote

google.com/amp/s/www.orla…
“As the decision to get vaccinated is a personal medical choice that should be made free from coercion and mandates from employers, the employee in question has been placed on administrative leave" said an agency spokesperson
The state health officer, Dr. Raul Pino, is a Cuban refugee who started by picking blueberries in CT but earned his masters in public health

I really do like the lede here on this WaPo profile:

"Let's start with the beard. J.D. Vance didn't used to have one."

washingtonpost.com/magazine/2022/…
J.D. Vance seems to think his changing image is a part of being a more interesting person:

“The price of being beloved by the establishment is you don’t say anything interesting... Dominant elite society is boring, it is completely unreflective, and it is increasingly wrong."
This was combined with Vance being upset with the negative critical response to the movie 'Hillbilly Elegy,' based off his book

Over the holidays I was cleaning my apartment and came across an old Blackberry.

Powered it up out of curiosity and it was like a time capsule. Texts, emails and yes, tweets, frozen in time from 2011.

(and on Ubersocial, the twitter app -- remember that?)
What struck me especially is how much kinder, funnier, and insightful Twitter was a decade ago, compared to today.

Genuine conversations between people with opposing views.

And with less characters per tweet!
I've struggled over the past two years or so to find the value of Twitter -- other than to get my blood pressure up.

I've tweeted less, and read less too. Twitter used to be a kind of informal assignment editor: conversations/ideas/pitches all whirling around

Hard to imagine now, but just years ago the House Intelligence Committee was seen as one of the most bipartisan in Congress.

Nunes and Schiff once had a bromance! They jointly launched an investigation into Russian meddling into 2016 election!
That all changed when Nunes, who was traveling with a cmte aide, jumped out of an Uber and disappeared one night in 2017.

The next day Nunes gave a press conference, saying a whistleblower had given evidence of Trump wiretapping

I broke the story here:

thedailybeast.com/devin-nunes-va…
Nunes then rushed to the White House to brief the president.

It later came out that White House officials were the ones who gave Nunes the information. But it did stir up a lot of dust at the time around Trump's wiretapping allegations
