Ever had the looming feeling that you should be more productive?

Sucks, doesn’t it.

We’ve become obsessed with optimizing every minute of our day and it’s starting to take a toll.

But it doesn’t have to.

Here are 6 tips to stay sane on your quest to getting more done.

👇
We’ve all been there.

The idea floating around in your head that there’s something unfinished.

A loose end that needs tying.

A more efficient way to spend your time.

Never able to settle down & enjoy the day.

Welcome to the anxious world of the Productivity Junkie.
It actually makes sense if you think about it.

After all, it feels good to be productive.

Knowing that you’re on top of things.

That you’ve exercised discipline and come out the better for it.

Boy that’s quite high…

Until it’s not.
Somewhere along the road, we started to think of time as something to conquer rather than enjoy.

TIME MANAGEMENT.

If I can just get to inbox zero…
If I can just make it through my to-do list…

Then!

Oh, then I’ll be happy.
But here’s the problem…

That time never actually comes, does it?

It’s a red herring, a fools errand.

The more we achieve and the more successful we become…

The more projects will fill our plate.

It’s the Catch 22 of high achievers.

We will never be finished.
So how can we reconcile these two outcomes?

How can we strive to achieve our goals…

WITHOUT giving ourselves anxiety attacks on a daily basis?

Well, according to Oliver Burkeman, achieving great things doesn’t have to come at the cost of our happiness.
In his book “Time Management for Mortals” Burkeman shows us how to tame our inner Productivity Junkie.

Here are the 6 tips we’ll cover

1. Embrace Procrastination
2. Pay Yourself First
3. Limit WIPs
4. Intentionally Lazy
5. Hobby ≠ Side Hustle
6. Cosmic Insignificance Therapy
//Embrace Procrastination//

First, we need to get more comfortable with procrastination.

Rather than run from it, accept it.

It’s a natural human tendency.

We’ve got to stop beating ourselves up maximizing every minute of our day.

It’s okay to not be fully optimized!
//Pay Yourself First//

There will never be ENOUGH time.

So, we need to carve out more of it for the things that are important to us.

When planning your day, pay yourself first.

Schedule the things that are important to you, and let everything else fill in the cracks.
//Limit Works In Progress//

For high achievers, it can be tempting to start a bunch of projects at once.

We get excited about something and we go.

But we’re creating hundreds of open loops.

All “unfinished.”

All a source of more anxiety.

Keep open loops to a minimum.
//Intentional Laziness//

We junkies tend to even fill free time with “productive acts”.

But where did we get this idea that free time needs to be “spent well?”

It’s free, enjoy it.

Tip: actively schedule Lazy Time blocks into your calendar. Do nothing, enjoy it.
//Hobby ≠ Side Hustle//

At some point, we replaced one with the other.

But they’re not the same.

A hobby is done for the joy of it, nothing else.

So no, you don’t have to turn your obsession with model planes into an Etsy store.

No matter how loud Gary V screams it.
//Cosmic Insignificance Therapy//

We tend to think we’re the center of the universe.

Turns out, we’re not.

Coming to terms with our utter insignificance can actually be quite liberating.

At the end of the day, nobody really cares how you spend your time.

Relax, enjoy.
In short, if you’re a Productivity Junkie, here’s your playbook:

1. Be okay with loose ends.
2. Schedule things that are important to you first.
3. Limit to 1 or 2 projects at a time.
4. Practice being lazy.
5. Stop it with the side hustles.
6. Remember nobody cares.
Working alone is hard.

I used to think cold email was the “door to door” salesmen of the internet.

Not for me.

That is…until I generated $238k —out of thin air— with a single campaign.

Here’s how to use cold-email to actually get more clients (without being a scum bag):
If you’re like me, and the thought of sending cold emails is a bit cringy.

I get it.

But the truth is, it can be a fantastic tool for generating revenue from scratch.

And you can do it without selling your soul.

Here’s how.
1 - Set expectations

Most people send out 20 - 30 emails and then complain that it doesn’t work.

But the tool isn’t broken, you’re just using it wrong.

Cold email is a volume game.

I recommend sending at least 1000 emails before making any adjustments.

The quickest “hack” to succeeding in a service business is learning to match your price to your client.

Here’s the story of the $150K project that forced me to rethink my pricing and changed the trajectory of my business (for good):
About 1.5 years into starting my agency, I landed an amazing opportunity.

A chance to pitch a dream client on a once-in-a-lifetime project.

I was PUMPED.
I spent weeks preparing.

Doing tons of research.
Designing the perfect deck.
Practicing my pitch dozens of times.

And when the day finally came...

In Q1 my agency did multiple 6 figures.

And I only worked about 1-2 hrs per day (on avg).

Here’s how I removed myself from 70% of the day-to-day operations and turned my agency into a low-maintenance machine:
In this thread I’m going to break down the steps I took to build a machine that requires ~10-15 hrs per week.

1. Map your processes
2. Identify your contribution
3. Cut the BS
4. Automate
5. Capture systems
6. Delegate / train
7. Rinse & repeat

Maintenance Mode ✅ Activated
1 - Map processes

Before anything, I built a high level picture of all of the processes that went into my business.

Brain dump style.

From getting the client through fulfillment.
(and everything in-between)

This step makes everything else so much easier. Don’t skip it.

The easiest way to automate team management?

Letting your team manage themselves.

Let's talk about the end-of-day checklist:
When I first started hiring for my agency, it was utter chaos.

Every morning I'd spend the first 2 hrs of the day scrambling around like a chicken with his head cut off.

"Who's working on what?"
"Did that thing get done?"
"Are we on track for XYZ?"
"Who needs what from me?"
Before I knew it, all the time I'd freed up by hiring was being consumed trying to get a handle on my team.

It was exhausting.

Then I learned about the checklist.

So so simple, yet oh so effective.

Here's how it works:

Hiring (and managing) contractors — a cheat sheet:
Over the years my agency has hired over 100 contractors (short and long-term).

If you’re looking for a lean way to scale, I can't think of a better resource.

But there's a lot of riff-raff out there.

So if you want this to work, here are a few things to keep in mind:
1) Stop hiring 1 person for 3 roles

We assume that because we "do it all" in our business, that we can find someone else to do it all, too.

Jack-of-all-trades just don’t work with contractors.

Define your roles clearly and hire for very specific tasks.

The best way to sell is to listen.

Here are 10 open-ended questions to use on your next discovery call:
"Can you tell me more about your goals and what you hope to achieve with this project/service?"
"What challenges are you currently facing in your business, and how do you think our services could help address those challenges?"
