CPAC notes/Day 3: Former president Trump continues to falsely claim the 2020 election was “rigged” and that he won presidential elections “twice.” And praises @RepMTG by name, one day after she spoke at a white nationalist conference in Florida.
Of note: Trump now signaling his solidarity with blocs of the congressional GOP, but has not spoken name of McCarthy (yet) or McConnell, just months before midterms. Instead praises R. Scott, Hagerty, J. Kennedy, Jim Jordan, Gaetz. Trump spelling out the Trump wing on Hill.
Trump calls the Democratic leaders “sinister.” Says they’re trying to silence “Joe Rogan” and “indoctrinating” children and using the FBI to ruin lives. Says @January6thCmte is full of “thugs.”
“It’s a lot of bullshit,” he says as the crowd cheers.
Roars now of “lock her up! Lock her up!” as Trump mentions @HillaryClinton. One of the lines that got much of the crowd on their feet.
Trump just said if he runs and wins, he would seek to expand executive power so the president could personally fire any federal employee. Wants to bring entire federal government to “heel.”

(thread) One unanswered question from the post-January 6 period inside the Trump White House: who provided Mike Lindell with his “martial law” papers, photographed on January 15, 2021? This story is detailed here by @maggieNYT…
Lindell has so far refused to give an answer about who told him to bring those papers and ideas to Trump, or who else was involved in related discussions during Trump’s final days.
Today at CPAC, @CBSNews asked Lindell several times to share the name of the lawyers. He says a “whole bunch of lawyers” gave him the documents, but grew irritated when asked to name them.
Eventually he started to chant “traitor!” at me for asking questions.
I sat down with @SecPompeo for a @CBSNews interview this afternoon. A few highlights...
Asked him about his recent use of the word "respect" re: Putin. "I have enormous respect for him," Pompeo said on Feb. 18, 2022. Earlier, he told Fox News Putin "has lots of gifts."
Q: What would you say to the Ukrainians as more horror unfolds in their own nation? Should the U.S. be ready to send in troops, or should that option just be totally off the table?
POMPEO: "It doesn't make sense to send U.S. forces to Ukraine today... "
Q: But what about a no-fly zone over Ukraine?
POMPEO: "I can't imagine that there aren't tools that create far less risk for the United States of America than a no-fly zone, that could have prevented this from happening."
news: A tense confrontation between the House select committee and Kimberly Guilfoyle unfolded privately on Friday morning, with Guilfoyle and her lawyers abruptly ending her conversation with the committee over concerns about its ground rules, according to 4 people familiar..
When Guilfoyle appeared on Friday’s virtual meeting, she and her lawyers grew immediately concerned when they saw who else was on the call, including lawmakers on the committee such as Rep. Adam Schiff of California and Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, both Democrats...
Guilfoyle spoke up and asked why members — and not just lawyers and committee staff — were on the call, three of the people said.
“Kim balked and said this isn’t my understanding,” one of the people said. A second person described her as “outraged."
Revealing snapshot of GOP politics as Russia attacks Ukraine: asked two possible 2024 Rs today about Trump's "smart" and "savvy" remarks about Putin. Both of them responded in similar ways. They refused to directly criticize Trump and quickly pivoted toward criticism of Biden...
