@truescotsman7 Sorry, should have said right-wing and/or Russian trolls ... You guys are so good at catching technical details, thanks for keeping me on my toes!
Quick rehash: I tweeted earlier today about the 52 of 53 Republicans who voted in February of 2020 that blackmailing Ukraine (withholding appropriated military materiel in exchange for anti-Biden propaganda) was not abusing power (i.e., all good) were useless hypocrites today.
Here is the roll-call senate.gov/legislative/LI…. Now apparently some folks are concerned because this vote did not actually stop the aid (which I did not say it did), just affirmed these 52 Republican senators are cool with the blackmail.
Of course, it was not just blackmail: Trump & Republicans, caught in the blackmail, attacked Zelensky as "corrupt" (a lie) and questioned whether Ukraine was really a sovereign democracy. Even if Ukraine eventually got the aid, this blackmail & the Republicans support of it hurt.
And, I have to admit: @SenatorCollins was "concerned" about the blackmail, but her vote that it was not an abuse of power speak magnitudes more than her "concern" which we all know is worthless.
While I appreciate Russian and/or right-wing trolls holding me accountable for technical details of my tweet thread, swarming my account does not make you right or me wrong, just shows how incredibly nervous you are about US talking about 6 years of Republicans comfort to Putin.
Blackmail & disparagement of Ukraine & Zelensky that lead to Trump's 1st impeachment, is just one stop on the 6 years of Republican support of Putin & attacks on Ukraine that should make anyone suspicious about their newly sparked appreciation for Zelensky, Ukraine, and democracy
2016: Russia cyber-attacks US to help elect Trump; Republicans gut anti-Russian policy from platform; ("free" campaign manager) Manfort floats policies to break-up Ukraine
2017: Republicans obstruct investigation into ongoing Russian cyber-attack on US
2018: Trump prostrates himself to Putin in Helsinki, declaring his trust of Russia over US
2019: Trump withholds military aid to Ukraine, trying to blackmail them into creating anti-Biden propaganda, Republican back Trump's blackmail attempt (i.e., 1st impeachment)
Throughout Trump Presidency: Trump undermines NATO military alliance (even promising to pull US out of NATO if he had 2nd term)
2021: Trump attempts coup against US
2022: Trump praises Putin's invasion of Ukraine calling Putin "genius" & "savvy". Even calling Putin smart *today* (while trashing western democratic leaders) 3 days after Putin invaded Ukraine
2020 (sorry, adding out-of-order): Trump pulls out of Open Skies treaty, which (as Vox notes here in 2019) really hurt Ukraine, making them vulnerable to disinformation and blind to Russian troop movement vox.com/2019/10/9/2090…
I have to admit it never occurred to me as I was writing up this thread how little people have thought about fact the 1st impeachment (the crime, cover-up, and acquittal) was, at every step, a vicious attack by (then) President Trump & Republicans on Ukraine & President Zelensky.

Thousands of years from now there is going to be a Jewish holiday centered on the exploits of Zelensky, and while the details will be fuzzy and/or wrong, the moral will be little Jewish girls & boys can grow up to be the bad ass leader of multicultural democracies.
Antisemites really digging into this tweet, casually hoping for the annihilation of all the Jews, which is exactly why on our holidays we both remember & celebrate our greatest triumphs, but also remember & build strength from our lowest moments.
There is this weird/sad/scary thing on Twitter where people will swarm my account with things like "I hope all of the Jews die" and then freak out when anyone calls them antisemitic.

This thread attacking me is super interesting, well researched, but a few points (1) Attack hinges on my "lying" by saying @SenatorCollins was "concerned" about Trump blackmailing Ukraine/Zelensky before voting that blackmailing Ukraine/Zelensky for political favors was cool ...
@SenatorCollins So, here is the quote, where she says it politico.com/news/2020/02/0…. Super cool that person attacking me went through Collins' congressional testimony, but that is not limit of her public comments ...
(2) More important, as I clearly laid out in my original thread: @SenatorCollins has no credibility, at all, and her words are meaningless. What matters is her actions, she constantly has "concerns" about things, then votes to make them happen to US (hi Justice Kavanaugh!) ...

In February 2020, just 2 years ago, 52 of 53 Republican senators voted to allow (then) President Trump to block congressionally authorized sale of critical military supplies to the courageous President Zelensky of Ukraine, unless Ukraine manufactured anti-Democratic propaganda.
Whatever those 52 senators say now about how tough they're on Putin (criticizing Biden for not being tough enough) is insulting & useless BS until they acknowledge & apologize for their vote to allow Trump to blackmail Zelensky for their support of authoritarianism over democracy
Here are the 52 senators who voted to withhold military aid to Ukraine in exchange for anti-Biden propaganda: Alexander (TN), @SenJohnBarrasso (WY), @MarshaBlackburn (TN), Bunt (MO), @JohnBoozman (AR), Braun (IN), Burr (NC), @SenCapito (WV), @BillCassidy (LA) ...

America needs to confront why so many political & media elites actively supported a brutal invasion by a flailing authoritarian petrostate against a sovereign democracy. And how Republican Party establishment & mainstream media provided the necessary cover to get US to this point
(1) Republican Party leadership in early 90's realized that they either needed to have more popular policies, or chip away at the democracy, to maintain a grip on power: they chose the latter. As their policies became more extreme, their attacks on democracy became more extreme.
(2) Entire Republican & mainstream media elite treated politics as a game, where the only thing that counted was power & money: no one considered the human impact to non-elite or long-range implications for all of US of their extreme polices or growing authoritarianism.

This not going to stop Russia from eventually capturing Ukraine if Putin is willing to absorb a horrific loss of Russian & Ukrainian lives, but (1) this ensures the fight will extract a much higher cost than Putin expected (2) portents a bloody & costly occupation.
Russian trolls out here saying all Ukraine needs to do is surrender to Putin, and all of this suffering & death will end, but Ukrainians know that a Russian occupation will also have suffering & death history.com/news/ukrainian…
"The Ukrainian famine—known as the Holodomor, a combination of the Ukrainian words for 'starvation' and 'to inflict death'—by one estimate claimed the lives of 3.9 million people, about 13 percent of the population ...
