That moment when survival and freedom depends on individual efforts. The war in Ukraine being taken up by citizens might be single most unifying event for Americans. washingtonpost.com/world/2022/02/…
The American militia movement began as an armed force against outside forces and then was led astray. Good paper on the US Militia movement: scholarworks.calstate.edu/downloads/x346…
One missing historical link in the current Ukraine conflict are the modern version of our WW2 era "Jedburgh's". Men and women dropped in behind enemy lines to support, coordinate and train resistance forces. Ukraine is at that point of need.
There are rumors, some past history but nothing factual from the ground. Is America going to send in SF and paramilitaries to coordinate guerrilla or insurgent groups inside Ukraine? latimes.com/opinion/story/…
The "Green Berets" were created in Europe to fight Russians. In 1952, (Aaron Bank) led the Army's first Special Forces unit, called the 10th Special Forces Group, a number which was selected to confound the Russians with suspicions of nine more such units" jwv.org/colonel-aaron-…
SF also has has DNA linkages to WW2 era 1st Special Forces group, a winter unit.. The first special forces group were labeled devils, thugs, cutthroats,...obviously Canadians wanted in on this action.
The goal of these groups is not just supporting and training resistance groups but also striking deep into the heart of enemy territory. From Russia to Iran to Afghanistan forces.net/news/special-f…
I had the privilege and honor of being with these groups while they did their job in Afghanistan. A group that still carries my logo and a group with direct linkages to the original Jedburgh's. We should all be proud of America's capability in times of duress.
It is important not confuse official U.S. forces with volunteers. Ukraine also has a history of volunteers who join various groups. SF units are direct reps of the President. Volunteers are pursuing personal not national agendas.
America (and Europe) has the tools at hand to fight this war at different levels of violence. We are already engaged in a military support role and aggressive counter messaging/hybrid role. Lets see if it escalates. vox.com/policy-and-pol…

Kurt Vonnegut was part of era of American writers forged by the horror of World War II. Vonnegut chose quirky humor and plain speaking to tell stories but above all he was passionate about writing. This doc, his story is definitely worth a watch. vonnegutmovie.com
Director Robert B. Weide (Curb Your Enthusiasm) inserts his friendship and life into the film. We realize that this is not a work of dispassionate observation and analysis but it works. It is depressing how few of Vonneguts appearances and speeches can be found online.
In the interviews available on line, Vonnegut is candid and entertaining. But the doc's discovery of hundreds of old films and interviews in the doc shows us America doesn't really preserve and honor their cultural icons well.

Remember part of what Trump was trying to withhold from Ukraine? 37 Javelin launchers and 210 missiles. They work magnificently against invading armored columns.
Trump was told that Putin supported his election, wanted out of NATO, wanted our troops out of Europe and initially wanted to lift sanctions on Russia. It is surprising that Putin didn't attack Ukraine during Trump's time in office. nytimes.com/2019/01/14/us/…
