Special benefits are obtained by performing Rudrabhishek according to the method described in ShuklaJurvedi Rudrashtadhyayi.
Yajnavalkya said in Jabalopanishad...
Shatrudriyeneti (शतरुद्रियै) means that by the continuous recitation of Shatrudriya, salvation is attained.
Yajurvediya who are unable to worship according to the rituals or are not familiar with this method can get the full benefit of Rudrabhishek by simply chanting the Shadakshari Mantra of Bhagavan Shiva – Om Namah Shivaya.
Mahadev is soon pleased by worshiping Shiva on Mahashivratri, Pradosh, and Shraawan months.
Shiva devotees perform Abhishek to Shiva on this day.
According to Shiva Purana, what is the result of doing Abhishek with which substance?
Anointing with water
Anoint Lord Shiva with water to get rid of all kinds of sorrows
- Meditate on the child form of Lord Shiva
- Fill 'pure water' in a copper vessel and apply kumkum tilak on the vessel.
- While chanting Om Indray Namah, tie a molly on the vessel.
Offer some petals of flowers while chanting Panchakshari Mantra ‘ॐ नम: शिवाय
Make a thin stream of water on Shivling and do Rudrabhishek. Clean the Shivling by wiping it thoroughly with a cloth.
Anointing with milk
Do Abhishek with milk to please Shiva and get his blessings. Meditate on Lord Shiva's 'light' form
While chanting 'Shri Kamdhenve Namah', tie a molly on the vessel.
- Offer some flower petals while chanting the Panchakshari mantra '‘ॐ नम: शिवाय'
Make a thin stream of milk on Shivling - do Rudrabhishek.
- While doing the Abhishek chant the mantra Om Sakal Lokaik Guruvai Namah
- Wash the Shivling with clean water and wipe it thoroughly with a cloth
Anointing with Fruit Juice
Anoint Lord Shiva with fruit juice for unbroken wealth gain and freedom from all kinds of debt.
Do mental meditation on the 'Nil Kantha' form of Lord Shiva. Filling the 'sugarcane juice' in a copper vessel, apply kumkum tilak from all sides.
While chanting Om Kuberai Namah, tie a molly on the vessel.
Offer some petals of flowers while chanting the Panchakshari Mantra ‘ॐ नम: शिवायa. Make a thin stream of fruit juice on the Shivling - do Rudrabhishek.

Anointing with mustard oil
To destroy the obstacles, anoint Lord Shiva with mustard oil. Meditate on the 'Pralayankar' form of Lord Shiva. Filling 'mustard oil' in a copper vessel, make a tilak of kumkum on all sides of the vessel. While chanting Bhai Bhairavai Namah,
Tie Mouli on the vessel.
-Offer some petals of flowers while chanting Panchakshari Mantra ‘ॐ नम: शिवाय. Make a thin edge of mustard oil on Shivling - do Rudrabhishek.
- Wash the Shivling with clean water and wipe it thoroughly with a cloth.
Anointing with Horse gram
For the beginning of any auspicious work and for progress in work, anoint Lord Shiva with gram dal. Do mental meditation of Lord Shiva's 'samadhi' form. Fill 'gram dal' in a copper vessel and surround the vessel. And do the tilak of kumkum from there.
While chanting 'Yakshanathay Namah', tie a molly on the vessel. Offer some petals of flowers while chanting Panchakshari Mantra ‘ॐ नम: शिवाय. Make Rudrabhishek while making a torrent of gram lentils on the Shivling.
While doing the abhishek, chant the mantra – Om Sham Shambhavay Namah. Wash the Shivling with clean water and wipe it thoroughly with a cloth.
Abhishek with black sesame
To destroy the system barrier and to protect from evil eye, do Abhishek with black sesame. Do mental meditation of the 'Nilvarna' form of Lord Shiva. Filling 'black sesame' in a copper vessel, make kumkum tilak from all four sides of the vessel.
Offer some petals of flowers while chanting Panchakshari Mantra ‘ॐ नम: शिवाय. Make Rudrabhishek by making an edge of black sesame on Shivling. Wash the Shivling with clean water and wipe it thoroughly with a cloth
Honey mixed ganga water
To get children and family happiness and peace, do anointing with Ganga water mixed with honey. Do mental meditation of Lord Shiva's 'Chandramouleshwar' form.
Fill the pot with "honey mixed Ganga water" and make a tilak of kumkum from all sides. While chanting Namah to the moon, tie Mouli on the vessel.
Offer some petals of flowers while chanting the Panchakshari mantra '‘ॐ नम: शिवाय'.
Make a thin stream of Ganga water mixed with honey on the Shivling - do Rudrabhishek. While doing the abhishek, chant 'Om Vam Chandramouleshwaraya Swaha' Abhishek with clean water on Shivling
Anointing with Ghee and honey
Abhishek with ghee and honey for the destruction of diseases and long life. Do mental meditation on the 'Tryambak' form of Lord Shiva. Filling 'ghee and honey' in a copper vessel, apply kumkum tilak from all four sides of the vessel.
While chanting “ॐ धन्वन्तरयै नम: “, tie a molly on the vessel. Offer some petals of flowers while chanting Panchakshari Mantra ‘ॐ नम: शिवाय, Make a thin stream of ghee and honey on the Shivling - do Rudrabhishek. Abhishek with clean water on Shivling.
Anointing with Kumkum Kesar Turmeric
To attain an attractive personality, anoint Lord Shiva with Kumkum Kesar Haldi. Meditate on the 'Neelkanth' form of Shiva. Filling 'Kumkum Kesar Haldi and Panchamrit' in a copper vessel, make Kumkum Tilak from all four sides of the vessel -
While chanting 'ॐ उमायै नम:’, tie a molly on the vessel. Offer some flower petals while chanting the Panchakshari mantra '‘ॐ नम: शिवाय”
While reciting the Panchakshari mantra, put some flower petals in the pot - '‘ॐ नम: शिवाय'
Then make a thin edge on the Shivling - do Rudrabhishek. Abhishek's mantra - ॐ ह्रौं ह्रौं ह्रौं नीलकंठाय स्वाहा Abhishek with clean water on Shivling.

2) Vana Parva of Mahabharata: In the Vana Parva, Markandya Muni is narrating the discussion between a brahamana named Kausika and a poultry-monger named Dharmavyadha who lived in Mithila.

1. Dashratha does not have a son who can take charge of his vast kingdom. Rishi Vasishtha advises him to worship Goddess Kamakshi in Kanchi in present-day Tamil Nadu state.
She blesses him to have 4 sons. He then performs a putresti (putra-kameshti) yagnya under the guidance of Rishi Rishyasringa [Ref: Brahmanda Purana 4.40.88-142; Skanda Purana 2.8.7.1].
2. Rishi Vishwamitra asks King Dasharatha that God Rama be sent with him to the forest to kill the Rakshasa obstructing his yagnya.
Dasharatha hesitatingly says that his son is not even 16 years old.
