81% of job applicants lie during an interview.

Elon Musk knows when they are lying.

Here's how:

🧡 πŸ‘‡
1/ First the background.

Ron Friedman, an award winning social psychologist,

found that 81% of people lie during job interviews.

This was an eye opening discovery.

And @elonmusk shared a nifty trick to spot liers.

πŸ‘‡
2/ But before that we need to understand WHY do people lie in the first place?

According to Charlie Munger,

fundamental algorithm of life forces people to β€œRepeat what works.”

So people being "people" just do that.
3/ The fact is,

Interviews encourage applicants to be dishonest.

Reason: They believe it is the only way to get a job offer. The world is biased.

There are Unconscious Biases at play during job interviews.

For example:
4/ Attractive people are viewed as more intelligent.

Taller people are thought to be more capable leaders.

If someone has a low voice, they're seen as more trustworthy and honest.

To stand out, there's no other way but to "Mimic" what works.

πŸ‘‡
5/ With so many reasons to lie it is hard to spot who's lying.

Here's how to do it?

There are 3 ways:

1- Eradicate the unconscious bias
2- Learn the body language
3- Take lessons from Elon Musk.
6/ #1 Eradicate the unconscious bias.

This is the most effective method and one that most organizations are slowly becoming aware of and adopting.

As an Executive Coach, I teach Leaders about these biases.

7/ #2 Learn the Body Language.

There are a few physical signs that someone is lying like they:

-look to the right or
-ask the same question again and again.

These strategies, are not reliable and may take years to learn.

But Don't worry.

Our boy Elon got your back.

πŸ‘‡
8/ #3 Elon Musk Teacheth:

To spot liars ask two questions,

"What were the most difficult problems you faced?" and

"How did you solve them?"

First question is generic, it's the second one that's magic.
9/ You've got an honest applicantβ€”"IF",

they can describe how they found the "solutions".

Musk says,

"Ones who struggled hard with a problem would remember. They know the details.”

Inability to explain how an issue was resolved, spots the lier.

But...
10/ This is only half of the puzzle.

The second half: Only the RIGHT person can spot the lier.

Charlie Munger says,
11/ So...You can spot the lier only if you are the expert.

Don't expect HR to find the right candidates.

To create your "A-Team", you need to jump into the field.

Also...

THERE'S ONE MORE THING πŸ‘‡
12/ If you are a job applicant then PLEASE don't hate me.

Here's my suggestion.

It's perfectly fine to exaggerate your strengths.

But getting caught while downplaying your weaknesses might cost you the job.

Instead BE HONEST.
13/ For example:

When asked about your experience with something you're unfamiliar with,

describe something similar that you're expert in.

You can also show your willingness to learn.

Remember: Hiring managers favours the COURAGE to be honest but hate LIES.

Courage is rare.
14/ That's how you spot a lier in an interview.
