1/ "No Fly Zones" a thread:
The term 'No Fly Zone' (NFZ) is being completely mis-used re. Ukraine.
A true NFZ is established to deny an opposing force the use of its air assets. We did this (or tried to) in Iraq & Bosnia in the 90s. Some fast air was engaged, though helicopters
2
roamed much more freely because of a lack of will to shoot them down.
Iraqi Air defence assets were also engaged.
In Libya 2011, what politicians WRONGLY called a "NFZ" was established.
It quickly became an opportunity to destroy the Libyan regime & its military infrastructure
3
in support of the rebels. The RAF & others eventually became the Rebels' "Air Force", providing Close Air Support (CAS) to advancing troops, destroying Libyan military ground forces & defences.
Importantly - in these previous NFZs, the opposition was limited (though dangerous)
4
In Ukraine, much Russian destruction is NOT being caused by its air assets (YET!)
It is missile & artillery & a "NFZ" CANNOT counter this; only "Close Air Support" could.
In reality, THIS (without really understanding it) is what most people are calling for when using 'a NFZ'.
5
It would mean NATO (or alliance) aircraft engaging Russians on the ground.
Regardless of Russia's brutality, the notion that NATO jets are going to start attacking EITHER Russian air assets as part of a 'true' NFZ,
OR acting as proxy Ukrainian Air Force CAS to attack Russian
6
ground forces is currently (& very sadly) unthinkable because of the repercussions.
The best we can do (at the moment) is continue MASSIVE sanctions (personal & national) & indirect military support in the hope that Ukraine can hold off the Russians long enough to make it hurt
7
so much back home that war becomes unsustainable.
As a nation Ukraine has shown astonishing bravery & resilience. In reality Russia has yet to unleash its full military might. #IStandWithUkraine & share the horror & sadness at their suffering.
I hope and pray Ukraine prevails🇺🇦
