Today marks one week since the war in Ukraine began.

Wars are horrible – they destroy homes, families, and entire nations.

But amidst the tragedy, there are always glimmers of hope that show the best of humanity.

Here are some of them.

A Thread.
Chef Jose Andres is famous for going to disaster zones to help feed people, regardless of their political background.

Guess who showed up earlier this week along the Ukraine-Poland border?

You guessed it.

Chef be out there feeding people.

Even as the conflict created more than 660,000 refugees, other nations have stepped up to help.

At this Poland train station, refugees are being welcomed with food and blankets.

The best part? They’re even handing out teddy bears to the children.

Right after the crisis began, Poland and Germany began offering free train rides to Ukrainians fleeing the violence.

Other countries like Austria, France, and Belgium joined in.

There are even stories of strangers helping to buy groceries for others.

You know who else isn’t being forgotten in the conflict?

Pets.

As soon as the conflict erupted, neighboring countries began accepting not only refugees, but even their pets.

This good boy just got a warm meal, thanks to a Romanian animal rescue charity.

❤🐶
Inside Ukraine itself, instead of fleeing, some local rabbis vowed to stay behind and help others.

Synagogues have stepped up to provide food, shelter and refuge to Jewish and non Jewish communities.

Religion at its best.
Refugees aren’t just looking out for themselves, they’re looking out for each other.

People are carrying the children of strangers across the border so they can be reunited with their families.

Speaking of helpers:

Airbnb announced that is is providing free shelter for nearly 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine.

The company is working with various countries to provide short and long term housing to those escaping the violence. Image
The world can be a dark place.

But even in the darkest of times, the best of humanity always finds a way to shine through. You just have to keep looking for it.

At Goodable, we promise we’ll never stop searching for these kinds of stories.

Join us.
In other news:

Eight thousand thermal blankets have been airlifted from Dubai to Moldova, to provide warmth for incoming refugees.

It's 0-degrees °C and snowing.

Look for the helpers.

While every news organization is focusing on the culprits, we want to do something different.

We want to tell you about Terry – and why he’s a hero.

He was told he had a 50% chance of survival.

But he didn’t lose hope.

Today we observed a solemn anniversary.

It’s Holocaust Remembrance Day.

We’re often taught about the horrors — but not the ordinary heroes who tried to help. Even in the darkest moments, the best of humanity found a way to shine through.

A thread about humanity and hope.
In 1938, Sir Nicholas Winton saved almost 700 Jewish children from German occupation, by evacuating them to the UK.

Decades later, those children would gather to surprise him — live on TV.

This is how he found out.

What’s even more incredible?

One of the children Nicolas saved was Leslie Brent, who went on to become one of the world's top immunologists who pioneered organ transplants.

Millions of people are alive today because of him. Leslie Brent, wearing a blue sweater, sitting in front of a

Everyone knows Dolly Parton is a music legend.

But today, in honor of her 76th birthday, we want to do something different.

Here are seven times Dolly Parton helped save the world.

A thread. 🧵
In 2020, Dolly Parton donated $1M to Covid research.

That donation helped fund the Moderna vaccine.

She’s the only musician who funded a vaccine, then literally got jabbed with it herself.

She even sang one of her songs to celebrate the moment.
In 1995, Dolly Parton saw her hometown’s literacy rates were terrible.

The high school dropout rate was 34%.

To help, she started giving our free books as a way to encourage kids to read.

Today, she’s given out more than 100 million free books to kids across America. Dolly reading to school chi...

Ontario, Canada's most populated province, was just hit with their worst snowstorm in years.

It led to school closures, traffic jams, and police warning people to stay home.

It also led to the most amazing acts of kindness you’ll ever see.

A Canadian Thread.

When this woman found her car buried underneath a massive pile of snow, how did she remove it?

With a curling broom.

Name something more Canadian, we’ll wait…

During the blizzard, he noticed a man who had fallen into the snow, and was nearly buried underneath all of it.

He immediately alerted his parents who called 911 and saved the man’s life.
