I've been asked by a lot of cis folks about what you can do to help. So I'm going to create a thread detailing the ways you can get involved and help trans folks in Texas.
π§΅1/6
DONATE: I've compiled a list of orgs to donate to that will support the trans community in Texas and trans folks generally. These orgs need the funds to do lifesaving work.
SPREAD THE WORD: Tell everyone you can about what is happening in Texas. A big problem is the lack of awareness. The media has been woefully lacking in reporting the unprecedented attacks on trans kids. Bring it up in conversations with friends and family.
3/6
SUPPORT TRANS FOLKS: If you know someone trans, be there for them as a friend. It is an incredibly difficult time for us all. Offer to buy them a burrito or just check in to see how they are doing.
4/6
GET ACTIVE: We need cis allies to write and call legislators to oppose all of the hateful bills. Volunteer your time with local LGBTQ orgs. It shouldn['t fall just to trans folks to fight for our right to exist.
5/6
STAY INFORMED: If you were surprised by the news in Texas you need to follow more trans activists to stay informed.
Elon called the decision to ban Trump "morally wrong." Trump instigated an insurrection and Elon takes more offense that he got banned from Twitter? What kind of fucked up priority is that?
If Elon reinstates Trump and other permanently banned accounts, advertisers and users will flee. He will destroy Twitter and it's revenue stream. You can't run a site based on a small vocal minority of reactionary white supremacists.
These crypto grifters are going after vulnerable people trying to preserve abortion rights. The fatal flaw in all of this, even if it worked, (it doesn't) is that women seeking abortions won't have time to research what a DAO is and how to access funds and travel out of state.
It can take me 10 minutes to explain to my students at Harvard Law what exactly a DAO is and how it works. If you can't explain something to an average person in a sentence or two, you have no hope of widespread adoption.
Vulnerabilities and bad faith actors could easily compromise DAOs focused on funding abortion care and cause it to fail. Beyond that, post-Roe, some states could begin criminally charging members of a DAO funding abortions with aiding and abetting abortion or even "homicide."
15 States led by Arkansas filed a amicus brief in the Alabama case last week. It's filled with histrionics and terrible legal writing unbecoming of a lawyer, let alone the 15 AG's that signed onto this transphobic screed. I'll be breaking down the brief here.
π§΅
This opening argument is reminiscent of the "teach the controversy" around climate change. Manufacture a controversy and then use that controversy to push through your preferred policy outcome through fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
The Economist's transphobic heel turn is being pushed by editor Helen Joyce, a viciously transphobic person who obsesses about trans people so much, she wrote an entire book about us.
Besides why is the Economist relevant in a case about healthcare?
The court has issued an update and orders on procedural matters. It has granted to the motion to intervene on behalf of the United States and motions to file amicus. That means the US is officially a party to the suit against Alabama. Opinion on PI to be released this week.
That means that the felony ban could continue through the end of this week even if the court grants the preliminary injunction against the gender affirming care ban. This isn't ideal and is partially the fault of the courts procedural shenanigans and the 30 day effective date.
Best case is that the court grants the PI and the law is blocked while Alabama appeals to the 11th circuit. Worst case is the court denies the the PI while plaintiffs appeal and the ban remains in place.
The Federal Court in Alabama has failed to act and has allowed a FELONY ban on lifesaving gender affirming care for minors to go into effect tonight at midnight. For the first time in US history, gender affirming care has been criminalized w/ punishments up to 10 years in prison.
Doctors will now be forced to violate their ethics or be imprisoned for following the standards of care supported by every major medical org in the country. Parents could be arrested for following the advice of doctors. Trans youth will be forcefully detransitioned.
This case was overseen by Judge Liles Burke, a radical conservative Trump appointed Fed Soc judge. He was more concerned about venue than the effect this ban would have on trans youth and their families.
New study shows that 94% of trans kids maintain their trans gender identity after 5 years while another 3.5% identified as nonbinary. This is a stark rebuttal of the bunk "desistance" numbers pushed by anti trans groups. publications.aap.org/pediatrics/artβ¦
This study has been ongoing since 2013 and will follow this cohort for twenty years. It's one of the largest observational studies ever conducted on trans youth with 317 participating.
Only 60% had started any sort of medical transition which indicates that medicalization is not inevitable. It is a treatment option best left to families and their doctor, not the government.
