🧵This 2024 federal funding audit from the WA State Auditor exposes an astonishing failure of accountability with a clear and persistent pattern of unauditable payments to the Department of Children, Youth, and Families totaling nearly $416 million dollars.
The findings are significant and also highlight over $76 million in additional questioned costs.
🚩“For the fourth year in a row, we are questioning all child care payments from the Child Care and Development Fund at the [DCYF].”
🚩”[DCYF] did not ensure payments to providers were allowable and properly supported, and did not comply with federal reporting requirements.”
🚩”[DCYF] did not comply with requirements to ensure payments to child care providers were allowable.”
The report does note corrective actions to resolve these issues with a timeline to improve accountability. But here’s the bottom line…similar findings have been REPEATING every fiscal year for at least the past four years.
This is completely unacceptable.
Remember, these tax dollars belong to ALL Americans, not just Washingtonians. We all need to push for accountability and transparency on how our money is spent.

I’ve highlighted the key findings here in red. This is a complete failure of oversight.
Among the fourteen agencies with findings, DCYF was issued the most findings by far.
