The other day I had to lock myself in the bathroom at work and cry...
I was born and raised in a tiny country neighboring Ukraine called Moldova. My home country recently became a center of a humanitarian crisis as it has welcomed over 120,000 refugees. (1/8)
To put things in perspective, every 8th child in the country is a refugee, at least three fourths of the refugees are now staying with Moldovan families in their homes and this tiny, economically challenged country is at capacity (2/8)
Despite the challenges, it is incredible to see how my country came together in the past 10 days. The government opened its borders to everyone in need, independent of their residence status, it openly communicated with the west, while maintaining neutrality... (3/8)
However, I am most impressed with the simple people who opened the doors to their homes and welcomed strangers who lost everything. Everyone is doing what they can... from donating money and supplies to creating apps, google docs, and basic websites to help. (4/8)
Today I live in the U.S. I have food, I have shelter, I have so much more. I am grateful for what this country has given me, but nonetheless I feel so powerless. My friends are there, my whole family is right near the border where military actions are taking place (5/8)
This feeling of nausea is impossible to shake off... (6/8)
