You must get gremlins off the pain side of your pleasure‐pain seesaw by doing one of two things:

➡️ PURSUE PAIN or ABSTAIN

#DopamineNation Part one:

PURSUE PAIN
#AnnaLembke says, “Pressing on the pain side of the balance can lead to its opposite —pleasure.
Unlike pressing on the pleasure side, the dopamine that comes from pain is indirect and potentially more enduring.” 3/7
When you explore the following methods to pursue intermittent pain, you startle the gremlins camping out on the pain side of the pleasure‐pain seesaw and get them to jump over to the pleasure side:
4/7
1.Turn down the temperature on the gremlins by plunging your body into an ice bath or enduring a cold shower for several minutes

The initial shock you experience will be followed by a gradual 200% rise in dopamine(equivalent to the dopamine rise one gets by snorting cocaine,
5/7
but unlike cocaine, you don’t experience a massive dopamine deficit afterward)

1. Turn up the temperature on the gremlins by vigorously exercising and sweating for several minutes.
Voluntary exercise leads to a gradual 100‐200% rise in dopamine.
6/7
3. Briefly starving the gremlins by intermittent fasting (consuming only water and electrolytes) for 16‐20 hours.

Your energy will paradoxically rise at the tail end of the fast and you will get tremendous pleasure from simple foods (like broccoli or blueberries)

People cannot change their habits without first changing their way of thinking. And that’s not easy!

📚Here are my insights from the book
" The Life-changing Magic of Tidying up "

Thread 🧵 Image
1. It Starts and Ends with your Mindset

People cannot change their habits without first changing their way of thinking. And that’s not easy!

"Remember: the KonMari Method I describe in this book is not a mere set of rules on how to sort, organize, and put things away...
...It is a guide to acquiring the right mindset for creating order and becoming a tidy person."

2. Your Home is a Sacred Space

Everyone needs a sanctuary

By eliminating excess visual information that doesn’t inspire joy, you can make your space much more peaceful & comfortable

What determines your success isn’t, “What do you want to enjoy?” The relevant question is, “What pain do you want to sustain?”

10 Top Lessons I Learn from the book
"The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck"

📚Book Review (thread)
1. Don’t Try

🗝 The key to a good life is not giving a f*ck about more; it’s giving a f*ck about only what is true and immediate and important.
2. Happiness Is a Problem

🙂 The solutions to today’s problems will lay the foundation for tomorrow’s problems and so on.

True happiness occurs only when you find the problems you enjoy having and enjoy solving.

Here are some ground rules for helping someone during a difficult time:

1. Grief belongs to the griever

You have a supporting role, not the central role, in your friend’s grief. Grief is a very personal experience and belongs entirely to the person experiencing it.
2. Stay present and state the truth

❗️You cannot know what the future will be, for yourself or your friend—it may or may not be better later.

You cannot know that your friend’s loved one “finished their work here”, or that they are in a “better place”.

#DopamineNation,
PART TWO

Thread (1/12) Image
You must get gremlins off the pain side of your pleasure-pain seesaw by doing one of two things:

✔️ Pursued or Abstain.

Part one pinned on my profile and this is part two:

ABSTAIN

(2/12)
Abstaining is intermittent dopamine fasting temporarily avoiding dopamine spikes so the gremlins get bored and leave the pain side of your pleasure-pain seesaw - until you regain a baseline level of motivation to do simple things.
