Agnes van Rhijn treats Peggy with respect and everyone else like they're grime under her fingernails. I find her relationship with Peggy fascinating because she has prejudices about literally everything else, and she talks down to everyone else. #TheGildedAgeHBO /1
It adds a layer to Agnes' character that keeps her from just being mean. She's resents that she had to marry an ol' bastard and has to take care of Ada, Marian, and her unworthy son. But Peggy is smart and self-sufficient--like her, but with better prospects. /2
It could just be that Agnes is grateful to finally have someone around that she doesn't have to micromanage, but I don't think that's where the show is going with it. /3
She read Peggy Scott and knew her upper-class background the minute she walked through the door, and still hired her, even though sending her home would've been the "proper" thing to do. /4
To me, this is the most interesting storyline in the show, and I hope they get into it more in season 2.

(It's also crossed my mind that, in Agnes' mind, older Black money > new White money. But I've no proof of that yet, and I'm not keyed into that class enough to know. But it's possible.) /6
