Excellent point that shows how this new WFH Zoom culture that media tells us is so very futuristic is still so ridden with old inequalities.

Even this thing of shaming people who have cameras off. Why? Not everyone can afford to have a curated Etsy accessorized "WFH space".
WFH over Zoom is the exact opposite of egalitarian.
Cos at least in office or in school, everyone shares the same space, no matter who they are.

But in WFH Zoom culture, the nicer your house or your room, the more you benefit from it.

Not everyone can turn cameras on, you know?
I'll list my own advantages and privileges.

I'm a middle aged professor who doesn't have kids.

Just that is such a huge advantage for me over my colleagues who have kids and have to manage their care or even presence while teaching.

This meme was a joke. But it isn't, really.
Y'all know I've been almost militantly against camera mandates in zoom classes. Right from the start of the pandemic. Throughout.

Never have I ever asked my students to have cameras on no matter what.

I tell them why it'll help me, then leave it to them

Maybe it's because I grew up in a 450 sqft apartment in a family of 4, but I will never understand the appeal of "work from home".

It's such a privilege play. And the most privileged will set the rules, like a 30 minute lunch break.
Today, my family and I are lucky and privileged enough to have nice spaces of our own.

But I'm remembering 1996, when I was 16 and my sister was 12 and the 4 of us shared this small 1 bedroom space.

And if the covid lockdown had happened then?

Yikes!
Golden rule, people, golden rule.
This.

This is why we need to define expectations, not in terms of the ones who can deliver the best, but in terms of who have the most constraints.

Because otherwise, people will feel pressure even implicitly. And feel horrible. 😞😞

I should say, who can deliver the "best".

That "best" belongs in quotes cos even that is often defined by those who have the most privilege and resources

Alright, so until I have to go teach, I'm gonna try to do a Bombay Street names thread from memory.

Again, like with NYC and Pune, a caveat that this is all from memory. I'm not a historian.

I just like sharing fun history I've read.

Let's start with Chinchpokli!
Okay, not exactly a "street" name but everyone who's been to Bombay has seen Chinchpokli and wondered what dafuq is a Chinchpokli?

No Marathi ever wonders that. It's self explanatory. A pokli of chinches! It's a cinch!

Hehe, it literally means Tamarind Hollow in Marathi.
Chinch - Tamarind
Pokli - Hollow

Very straightforward.

Getting a bunch of "Say publicly now that BJP won Uttar Pradesh" messages.

Kyun Bhai, Ghar pe paper nahin aata Kya? 😂😂
Sanghi folks, this is not world test championship where I was like, respect, new zealand, you deserved the win.

Cos elections aren't sports contests. And I'm not a politician to have to be graceful in defeat.

I can say and will say, you didn't deserve this win.
Now if you want to flood my mentions or QT my old tweets with gloating about the Uttar Pradesh results, go for it. You have my blessings.

My mentions are extremely sanitized anyway. And as I demonstrated with those tweets, it just helps broaden my reach.

And 2024 is coming.

Alright, let's start with Pune then. This is all from memory, so please bhool chook dyaavi ghyaavi.

Obviously not going to explain obviously famous names like Mahatma Gandhi Road and Tilak Road and such. Rather names of roads and spots that are famous.

Starting with Nal Stop!
Nal Stop only recently regained its status as a proper stop. Cos it's a stop on the brand new metro.

It gets its name from the fact that once upon a time, it was the final stop on the then bus lines. So the city had installed a lot of faucets of drinking water there.
नळ (Nal) is the Marathi for faucet. So it was quite literally the last stop, with a lot of faucets, where people could fill up water before heading out into the then wild lands of Erandwane and Kothrud and Pashan and whatnot.

The faucets were removed decades ago.

It's that time of the year when I get pissed off at why India has to wait 3 days to count election results even at state level when the rest of the world usually starts counting votes right after voting ends.

It's such an obvious flaw in the system for malfeasance or suspicion.
I've heard the usual "India alag hai yaar" bros giving excuses like how big and diverse and all India is.

They really don't hold water. Abraham Lincoln's win was called the midnight after polls closed cos of a revolutionary new invention called the telegraph.
Maybe I'm being too "NRI" but I feel like India 2022 should be at least on par with USA 1860 when it comes to how democracy functions.

Don't people see the obvious problem with these long delays? It seems like a delay by design, not by compulsion.

I've been working on and off on a travel book about our long long Chile trip. It mostly sits in my drafts as I wonder if anyone would even read such a book. Just me rambling about our trip.

Here's an excerpt. What do you think?

Would you read 250 pages of this? ImageImageImageImage
The book will feature tweets posted from back when we visited, so here's the tweet about Serena and Venus
