About 0.1 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) is generated in India every day. That is approximately 36.5 million tonnes annually. Per capita waste generation in major Indian cities ranges from 0.2 kg to 0.6 kg.
In 2012, cities around the world generated 1.3 billion tonnes of solid waste per year, amounting to a footprint of 1.2 kilograms per person per day. With rapid population growth and urbanization, municipal waste generation is expected to rise to 2.2 billion tonnes by 2025.
As each household generates MSW so we need to take steps for that as unprocessed waste can become a hazard for us. We can take an example of #Japan- in 1953 Minamata disease caused the death of 1784 approx.
The scale of the problem? Waste is dumped in landfills that pollute the air, water, and land by releasing harmful gases and generating bacteria that have the potential to harm us. In the year 2018, about 146.1 million tons of MSW were landfilled.
