On the anniversary of the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, it's important to understand how we got here: violent extremism fueled by Trump’s Big Lie.
WHAT WE FOUND in our investigation into former President Trump’s campaign to pressure DOJ to overturn the election. ⬇️
On Jan 22, @ktbenner reported that Acting AAG Jeffrey Clark sought to involve DOJ in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results & plotted with then-President Trump to oust Acting AG Jeffrey Rosen, who reportedly refused Trump’s demands. /1 nytimes.com/2021/01/22/us/…
Two days later, @JessBravin & @sgurman reported that Trump had urged DOJ to file a lawsuit in the Supreme Court seeking to invalidate President Biden’s victory. /2 wsj.com/articles/trump…
Meadows' involvement in the events leading to Jan 6 isn't up for debate. Our investigation found that, without a doubt, he asked Acting AG Rosen to initiate baseless election fraud investigations on behalf of Trump—and this "Big Lie" helped incite the insurrection.
KEY POINTS ⬇️
.@JudiciaryDems found that from 12/29-1/11, Meadows asked DOJ to:
1) Investigate various discredited claims of election fraud in Georgia that the Trump campaign was unsuccessfully pursuing in court;
2) Investigate false claims of “signature match anomalies” in Fulton County, Georgia, even though Republican state elections officials had made clear “there has been no evidence presented of any issues with the signature matching process.”
Republicans hold such strong opinions about the Biden Admin’s immigration policies, it almost seems that they would like us to return to the immigration policies of President Trump.
Let's take a look at how those policies were inhumane, unlawful, & weakened our border security⬇️
The Republican Administration cruelly separated nearly 4,000 children from their families between July 1, 2017 and January 20, 2021 under their “zero-tolerance” policy, causing permanent trauma to these children.
The Republican Administration shut down legal avenues for vulnerable families and children fleeing persecution, leaving them stranded and at the mercy of criminal organizations.
Here's the big picture: Donald Trump’s efforts to spread his "Big Lie" and undermine the results of the election helped incite the violent insurrection on January 6, 2021.
While the Committee continues our investigation, HERE are our recommendations for next steps (so far) ⬇️
The Judiciary Committee report highlights several ways in which bad-faith actors can exploit DOJ policy and norms to provide a platform for election fraud claims—even when the claims are not backed by any credible evidence—and insert DOJ unnecessarily in political controversies.
The following are potential legislative and oversight steps to strengthen DOJ’s protections against politicization of its investigative and prosecutorial powers and additional measures that should be taken in response to this episode:
