Lord Ahmad is minister of state for South Asia, has been in post for four years, and has been involved in the peace talks underway in Doha between the Taliban and Afghan government over the past year.

A report presented to the government in January called for an urgent assessment of the risks of withdrawal.
Ministers, it said, had “shown little inclination to exert an independent voice on policy in Afghanistan”
The Conservative chair of the Lords international affairs and defence committee, Baroness Anelay, told @SkyNews she was “very disappointed” that no such assessment was provided when the government responded in March.
Ben Wallace on @SkyNews says the Taliban are allowing people through to a processing centre "contrary to reports".
He says the problem is "they are letting everyone through" to the airport including people w/out permission to fly - leaving soldiers to do "crowd control".
