The remarks came close to meeting a demand issued by Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, in the months before his invasion of Ukraine to promise not to join Nato

In a nightly address, Mr Zelensky told the Ukrainian people that negotiations with the Russians were going “pretty good”, although he added: “Let’s see.”
