Scott Paul: The triangulation the US sought in the 1980s between China, Russia, & the US was so there'd be no ganging up on someone. Xi Jinping made a serious mistake in supporting Russia's goals, thinking they'd have no repercussions & would make US look weak.

Scott Paul: There are a lot of consequences if Xi Jinping continues down this road.
Rick: I think Putin is a smarter guy than to jump in the middle of this. He has to have some backers somewhere, a bankroll he can depend on. I think it's China.

Scott Paul: It's clear there were conversations between Russian leadership & leadership of the Chinese Communist party. I do think Putin--and he's not the only one who's overestimated the strength of his military campaign--thought he could get help from China.

Scott Paul: With the pandemic & the supply chain problems, it was a wake-up call to reshore manufacturing. There are a couple of things the Russian invasion of Ukraine brings to the surface, such as expanding the list of things we need like nickel.

Scott Paul: We did a report in 2013 on supply chain vulnerabilities for supply chain products & raw materials necessary for national security. Nothing was done b/c it wasn't "necessary" because we weren't in crisis. Now we have multiple crises.
