My generation, which grew up in the shadow of the Iraq war, learned to be instinctively distrusting of US foreign policy, and that alone created an entire worldview in perpetuity for many of my peers, particularly on the left.
Those same people are now very angry as they are slowly coming to realise that the generations below them have grown up largely in the shadow of Russian imperialist violence, and that they have lost control of the narrative that comforted them through decades of the war on terror
Now we've got 37 year old social media pundits screaming about George Bush to 17 year olds with Ukrainian flags in their profile pictures. It's little more than the inevitable death rasp of the Tankie left.
Many of these very mainstream figures engaged in outright war crimes revisionism on Syria, due to their ideological position that could not see a non-US aligned state as an aggressor. They suffered no personal, political or professional consequences for doing so.
That ended the moment Russia launched a full scale invasion of Ukraine, a fascist dictatorship launching a naked war of aggression against a liberal democracy. These people are now terrified they are facing consequences for their words, that people are now no longer ignoring it.
That is what is playing out now in Anglo-left spaces. An entire generation of pundits finding their outdated and prejudiced political ideology is no longer tolerated in spaces they used to dominate. The show is over. And we're left with nothing but the wailing & gnashing of teeth
