Some really alarming content related to the #AFLM is doing the rounds today. We don’t know if it’s genuine or not, but one thing is clear - in the course of a dispute initially between two men, another woman has been dragged in and spoken about offensively. 1/
This is a pattern, and one that is all too familiar to so many of us. We don’t know who features in these videos, who released the information or why, but there’s one thing we do know: this is precisely why sport feels like an unsafe environment for many people. 2/
Women’s voices in sport and safe places in sport for women, girls and non binary folk are important and necessary. In fact, they’re essential. On our podcast, we often discuss the barriers for women being more involved in sport - moments like this are a huge one. 3/
On this week’s podcast we spoke about a recent report into sexist attitudes in Australian society broadly. These must be tackled in order for sport to feel like a safe environment for everyone. You can read more about that report here: smh.com.au/national/new-r… 4/
Finally, it’s extremely disappointing that what began as a “beef” between two men is completely overshadowing the start of the #AFLW finals. These women have worked their butts off to keep this season going. They deserve our support, and to have all eyes on them this weekend. 5/
So get around North and Freo, who meet this Saturday at 2:10pm Melbourne time. Both teams finished on 28 pts this season and are only marginally separated on percentage. When they met in round 5, North won by 10 pts. Can they do it again? 6/
We can’t pick a winner, but we can’t wait to see both teams run out this Saturday. This is where our energies will be this weekend: with the #AFLW players, who have given so much to this game, and with all of those in (and on) the outer. ~
