In the 1980s when Steve Jobs was setting up Apple Company, he met John Sculley. John Sculley was then the CEO of the Pepsi brand. Pepsi was already one of the most profitable businesses in the world during that time. And John Sculley was a celebrated CEO.
Jobs wanted Sculley to join his Apple startup. But Apple was an unknown small company back then and getting Sculley on board was nearly impossible.
In the early 1980s, Jobs met Sculley every weekend for five months to convince him to join Apple. Sculley didn't want to leave Pepsi and join a less reputed, small company with less pay. And at the end of the conversation, Sculley turned down the offer and got up to leave.
Then Steve Jobs asked Sculley one last time.
“You want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?”
The best sales pitch ever. And Sculley changed his mind.
On April 11, 1983, Sculley joined Apple as the CEO. And from 1983 to 1993, he was the CEO.
🚀What is the lesson?
🔥It is the WHY that matters for people.
🔥People take risks if they have a strong why. They buy, sell and decide because of the WHY.
If you can give people a strong reason as to why your product matter for their life, that’s your whole marketing strategy in a sentence.
Or if you are trying to figure out your million-dollar idea, start with WHY. #startwithwhy#salespitch#marketingadvice#marketingtips
