Good morning from Ukraine.

Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

But western Ukraine was the target of strikes overnight: a number of missiles struck an aircraft repair facility in Lviv just before dawn.

Here are the details…
This was the first strike on Lviv, within the city’s limits, since the war began.

The city has swelled with internally displaced people and refugees seeking safety from the east
Lviv is a main transportation hub from Kyiv and other points in Ukraine, then onward to safe areas in Poland.

Humanitarian groups, reporters, foreign volunteers and international organizations have all surged into the area since the war began
A Ukrainian official said that there were four strikes that hit the Lviv airport complex, and two missiles were shot down… the missiles were launched from the Black Sea region

Official reports no fatalities and one injury, though not severe
These limited strikes in the west of Ukraine continue to press a Russian message — that they can strike anywhere in the country they want.. this time 45 miles from the border with Poland
And last night Ukrainian officials began talking about the death of an American citizen, since identified as James Hill of Idaho.

He was killed by Russian fire while waiting in line for bread.

His body was found on the street by police, his sister said

Hill had been in Ukraine to care for his partner who was in a Ukrainian hospital being treated for multiple sclerosis, per Reuters.

He was killed in Chernihiv, which is in northern Ukraine.
"Intense bombing! still alive. Limited food. Room very cold," Hill said in what would be his last posting on Facebook, earlier in the week

War forces a new kind of thinking.

I was in a car when I saw a group of people running:

my head is on a swivel… are there air raid sirens? What’s happening? Is there danger?

The local bus had arrived and a bunch of people were running to catch it from all directions
So many different sounds.

Many hotels use their fire alarm as their local air raid siren.

Here’s what that sounded like last week:

In a photo distributed by Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs — a photo of a child being escorted by soldiers after escaping the deadly fighting in Irpin, outside Kyiv.
Spotted: the now world famous tractors in Ukraine working the fields… sadly could not snap a photo.

Manure appears to be spread all over in the areas that we are traveling through
Roads are so much better in Ukraine than say California… smooth sailing over hundreds of KMs

No one was guarding checkpoint leaving a major city in central Ukraine.. have not had a lot of problems moving around… as if everyone took a deep breath in and relaxed just a little
Always stay strapped — with a headlamp — because you never know when the power will go out.

We ran into these Italian reporters who had the same idea and naturally had to take a photo together
On the road again today: a sampling of the playlist put together by @mepfuller that I’ve been using as chill music
We visited the city of Vinnytsia recently in Central Ukraine.

Spring is here and people are out and about on the streets.

Restaurants just reopened this week.
But further east you start to see signs of logistical stress… empty shelves at this gas station that a few weeks ago would have been full
We visited some ladies who take care of street cats.

Though the Russians bombed a site near her home, Helen won’t leave the city — “who would take care of the cats?”
“I very love cats,” said Helen.

She said even if she was hungry she would feed her cats, because they don’t know what war is.

Her pension is $65 usd per month, which she says is a constant stress to take care of herself and her cats
Overheard on the radio in southern Ukraine:

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball,’ followed by an upbeat Ukrainian song about how great Odesa is
Both cats and dogs have a major place in the story of this conflict

Having posted about cats, today’s photo of war dogs answer the question: how well are Ukrainian stray dogs cared for?

Let me respond w a photo of dogs literally sleeping on piles of food from well-wishers

Good morning from Ukraine.

Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Putin held a stadium rally last night; while Zelenskyy gave a one-on-one appeal to the camera...

Zelenskyy said 180,000 have been rescued by humanitarian corridors, including thousands from embattled Mariupol... Image
Mariupol is a southern city enduring widespread suffering due to encirclement, bombardment and dwindling supplies of food/water.

Zelensky said 9K people evacuated in last day.

I spoke to a soldier today from Mariupol. He hadn't spoken to his family since March 3.
Zelenskyy: 180K have been rescued fr/cities under Russian attack via humanitarian corridors (7 of which are currently active)

“The initial plan of the Russian military to seize our state failed,” he said, so they have nothing else but “cruel and erroneous tactics to exhaust us."

Good morning from Ukraine.

Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands, and this morning is emerging from a multi-day curfew.

It coincided with a Ukrainian mil counteroffensive; and such curfews have been implemented in part to root out saboteurs, which is the topic I want to start with...
Our All Things Considered story showed saboteur hunting efforts in W Ukraine, along Belausian border, and central Ukraine.

We began in a small village outside Lviv, W Ukraine, where territorial defense members were taking reports of suspicious activity

In NW Ukraine, along the border with Belarus, in Rivne Oblast, the deputy police chief tells us they are detaining around 16 people per day suspected of passing on information to the Russian government/military:

Good morning from Ukraine.

Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands, but is under a city-wide lockdown until Thursday morning. Local authorities have not said why.

Zelenskyy speaks to the U.S. Congress shortly, and is poised to ask for more help.
Meanwhile: positive signs for civilians as more than 20K have been able to evacuate the embattled southern port city of Mariupol.

The UN now says that the number of refugees that have left Ukraine due to the war exceeds 3 million people
We are soon entering the fourth week of the war.

Beyond the incalculable damage in death and human suffering, Ukraine has estimated that in the last few weeks its economy has lost more than 1/2 a trillion due to the war.

That's more than 3x its GDP.

Good morning from Ukraine.

Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands, but was subject to airstrikes Tuesday which hit residential buildings areas around the city.

And tension is rising in the city due to a curfew that will begin this evening, and run until Thursday morning.
The curfew in Kyiv is the longest of its kind since a multi-day curfew was implemented in the first days of the war.

Back then, local authorities said they were on the hunt for Russian saboteurs in the city. This time, they are less descriptive as to why the curfew is necessary
NPR's @LeilaFadel reported from Kyiv that "the sounds of artillery, Russian strikes, that's commonplace" -- but also that Russian forces are 10 miles away from the city center and face enormous challenges if they attempt to breach the city's defenses

Good morning from Ukraine.

Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

And further to the south, unarmed Ukrainians continue to bravely demonstrate against Russian occupation. Notice no one reacts w fear when shots are fired in this video from Kherson
The Russian mil continues to press Kyiv but they continue to be stuck in an “operational pause” — they are making some slight progress in the south but without much momentum.

While there were Americans and other foreign fighter training at the Yavoriv training center, none appear to have been among the 35 killed and 134 injured yesterday morning near the Polish border.

Morning to readers, from Ukraine to wherever you are seeing this.

Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

But deadly news overnight: at least 35 have been killed, 135 injured, at the Yavoriv military base near the Polish border, an upwards estimate from initial reports.
Eight Russian rockets were launched from the Black Sea, per the governor of the Lviv Oblast.

It's a shocking development, and fractures the relative safety that those felt in western Ukraine, away from the front lines.
It's another wake-up call for Poland.

The Ukrainian military facility is only 22 miles from the border.

And it is in the Lviv Oblast, an area with strong Polish ties and roots.

And then there's the relative proximity to the rest of Europe:
