Japan and German government ministers are heading to Qatar this weekend to try to secure more LNG supplies
🇶🇦 🚢 🇯🇵 🇩🇪

🤔 Qatar previously said it can’t offer much immediate help as most supplies are tied up in long-term contracts… will that change?

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Also, will Qatar want to help Japan?

Jera, Japan’s top utility, didn’t renew a recent contract with Qatar, which caused a rift between the two nations 💥

The Japanese government has been trying to repair the relationship with Qatar, and the latest trip is probably part of that
Meanwhile, Germany doesn’t actually import LNG (yet) 🇩🇪

Germany is backing the construction of LNG import facilities to reduce dependence on Russian pipeline imports, but the country needs “more liquefied natural gas in the short term,” said Economy Minister Robert Habeck
The Japan and German officials are also going to UAE this weekend 🇦🇪

But the UAE’s current LNG supplies are limited, and it isn’t clear if they can provide either country much relief 🚢

Before the war in Ukraine, China was becoming more reliant on Russian energy, metal and crops
🇨🇳🤝🇷🇺

But relations have become more complicated in recent weeks, raising questions about future trade

Here’s how China’s trade with Russia may change 👇

bloombergquint.com/china/ukraine-… Image
Energy (1) ⚡️

Following the invasion, Chinese buyers, and the lenders that finance their purchases, have largely shunned Russian shipments of coal and LNG, as well as crude

While it likely temporary, it reflects companies’ deeper concerns about becoming ensnared in sanctions Image
Energy (2) ⚡️

China will likely expand imports of Russian LNG

But coal is different. Russian supply is a tiny fraction of what China consumes, and Beijing’s plan to raise the capacity of its coal industry suggests may be doing away with imports entirely

🇯🇵 Japan policymakers call for faster reactor restarts
🇨🇿 Czech opens tender for atomic plant
Reaching net zero emissions by 2050 won’t be easy

🇬🇧 U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to meet with the nuclear industry on Monday to discuss how quickly plans to build new capacity can be rolled out, as the nation seeks energy self-sufficiency in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Tokyo area’s power supply is VERY tight right now⚡️ 🇯🇵

Tepco only has 2% of power reserves, as an earthquake in Fukushima earlier this week knocked offline some thermal power plants

Tepco is asking customers to conserve electricity
This is very abnormal. 9pm-10pm is NOT a peak demand period
This week’s earthquake is a reminder that Japan has very thin power reserves

A lot of oil-fired power plants have been retired, and nuclear remains largely idled (due to the earthquake/tsunami risk)

Shell has just been cleared by Australia's regulator to restart its giant Prelude LNG export plant 🇦🇺👌

👍 NOPSEMA said Shell fulfilled a required direction order
⚡ Prelude closed in early-Dec. due to a power failure
🚢 The facility will provide much-needed supply to the market
Background:

More than 100 non-essential staff were evacuated in early December from Prelude after an outage left workers without ventilation, potable water services and a sewage treatment system

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
An inspection by Australia’s offshore petroleum regulator found that Shell didnt "have a sufficient understanding of the risks of the power system on the facility, including failure mechanisms, interdependencies and recovery"

Shell couldn't restart until the regulator gave an OK
