I’m very proud of my wife @HelenRibee for passing another ED exam leaving just the OSCE part C to go for MRCEM.

She is pretty amazing. Wife, mother of 2. Or 3 if you count me. Manages the house and finances and organising, even when I do try and share this.

She has also had a more convoluted career journey than I have (and I’m currently st9 equiv with 18 mo this to go).

She was an ortho reg for 6 years. She wasn’t a trainee. But she was pretty boss. The ‘boys’ would often not stand a chance.

She went on may leave for our first, B, and whilst away from work had a radical change of heart and decided to go back switching to ED.

She *chose* not to go into training. Trainees in the region get flung all over the god-darn area.

Child. Life. Etc. Plus all …

All the learning needs/ sub specialties are available locally.

She does have, very reasonably, desires on becoming a consultant still. WHY NOT?!

So, #CESR it is then.
Cool. Job has this down. A good framework. People. Etc
Thanks @RoyalStokeED .

But, now a problem.

The @gmcuk are responsible for issuing CESR award.

Royal colleges are not, like they are for #CCT.

Are you a #trainee #juniordoctor ?
Have you taken #maternityleave?
I am guessing your training time wasn’t reset due to your parental leave.
6/n
I’m guessing you got to pause training to take parental leave.

CESR-seeking doctors are not afforded this luxury.

LUXURY?!
Yes. For someone like my wife or the thousands others (probably), they have to sort all their CESR paperwork over a single continual 5 year period.
7/
That’s 5 calendar years.

And you cannot take a paise on the middle for, say, having a baby.

If you were to have, say, 9 months maternity leave within the 5 years, either you are now minus 9 months of your time. Or you start the 5 years again once you get back.

That’s right
8/n
Think that through.

Sounds reasonable?!??

NO

It sounds DISCRIMINATORY.

Who is this policy going to affect mostly?
Women (cos mat leave).
Non-native UK doctors (cos many are non-Trainees).

You agree?

Now the problem.
Does anyone care?
9/
Obviously the docs this affects care.
It messes up their lives. Keeps them on the conveyor for years. Risk of stagnation. Forever being a service provider.
Prevents them from achieving their career end-goals.
Forces to choose between career and family.
10/
Does anyone else care?

Been going on for ages so I don’t think the GMC cares.

What about the colleges? They aren’t directly affected but yes, indirectly they are.

And they are a very relevant pressure body.

What say you royal colleges?
Do you care?
11/
Or do you vaguely support indirect discrimination to some extent?

@RCoANews @RCEMevents @RCEMPolicyVP @RCPCHtweets @RCPhysicians @AoMRC

Aren’t we at the point yet of fully supporting non-‘traditional’ career pathways?

There’s been some great work done already.
12/
By various individuals and organisations.

Good #SAS representation definitely.

But there is still this glaringly big hole. That, handily, doesn’t affect you if you are…..male.

I think this is terrible.

Since starting again, now in ED, my wife has been there for 2.5 yrs
13/
, and a further one year on mat leave again.

Now, she gets to choose.

- start the 5 year CESR clock now.
- have another child and then when she goes back after that start the 5 years then

If you aren’t screaming out WTF yet then wtf is wrong with you, respectfully…?
14/
This needs to change.
A legal challenge perhaps?
Pressure from relevant organisations
Relevant influential individuals.
General acrimonious feeling.

Can anyone help?

I don’t have much expertise with any of this. I am a humble anaesthetic trainee.

My wife says I shouldnt
15/
Put out this tweet, shouldnt put my head above the parapet should it risk my own career goals. That’s sad.

But I can’t stand by and do nothing.
Please can you help.

Spread the word. RT this thread. Like it etc. Add your voice, your story, your support.

Please tag as many relevant people as you can.

My Twitter reach is tiny. I am no influencer or #MedTwitter #orthotwitter celebrity.

So I am asking for the kindness of others to help with ……. I dunno. Trying to change things a little bit.
17/END

Maybe right a wrong.
Make something very unfair… fair.
Make people a bit happier.

Thanks for your time.
