Congratulations to all the M4s that #Match2022-ed a couple days ago, including our own @allison_milen!
Did know #ObGyn is leading change in the way the Match is done? Here’s a 🧵 on how! 1/10
Early 1900s: hospitals 🏥 were competing with each other to get the best medical students 🧑⚕️, and medical students were competing with each other to get the best internships offers 🤩, which were made via telegram! 2/10
By the 1940s, hospitals would make very early offers to M3 or even M2s! Students had 10 days, sometimes only 12 hours ⏳ , to respond to an offer via phone or telegram without knowing what other offers might come in! 😰 3/10
From 1945 through 1951, efforts were made to enforce a uniform date for accepting offers, but students and hospitals were still left scrambling or on short deadlines. 😤😩😵💫 4/10
In 1950, it was decided that a clearinghouse should have a centralized mechanism to assign students and internships, and Dr. Mullin, dean of students at U. Chicago School of Medicine, and Mr. Stalnaker, Director of Studies at the AAMC proposed an algorithm 🧮5/10
However, William Hardy Hendren III, an M4 at Harvard recognized that this algorithm would disadvantage students and developed the Stable Marriage Algorithm, which was trialed for the first Match, in 1952! Thanks, William 🙌🏾! 6/10
The NRMP algorithm saw only minor changes from 1952 until 1997. In 1998, the NRMP decided to adopt an applicant-proposing version of the Stable Marriage algorithm, and include considerations for couples matching 💏 and applying for multiple specialities 🔬💊🦠🩸. 7/10
So far, they've implemented:
-A final app deadline of Oct. 1.
-Limiting interview invitations
-Sending out all interview invites on a single day
-Informing applicants of their final app status by Nov. 22.
-Implementing a Standardized Letter of Evaluation in their application 9/10
We hope to continue seeing advancements in the way the @Inside_TheMatch process is completed and are proud that ObGyns are leading the way! 10/10
