3. Not only are Ligon and John tight as friends, but their business models are also intertwined as well. Ligonier advertises at #ShepCon & vice versa...."A rising tide lifts all boats." Many of the fanatical "Mac"olytes move freely between the 2 & buy resources from both.
4. The real issue here is a culture, unfortunately NOT specific to John/@GraceComChurch, is that John (or another elder) is the king of an religious business empire where nobody holds him actually accountable. Same with @Phil_Johnson_. @ModernDayZorro has several examples.
5. -- And as long as the money, clicks, and downloads keep rolling in, there is no incentive to change. --
6. This is why scandals with the likes of Mahaney, Driscoll, MacDonald, Piper/Rigney/Naselli etc keep recurring. Different men/theology/character flaws - same root.
7. In a perfect world, 1 Timothy 5:19-21 would apply. In THIS world, where the rules simply don't apply (or, to be honest, won't be applied), the only solution is to keep pressure on. @control_podcast covered the partiality issue well a few days ago.
8. So the only solution for those of us who actually care about having a church that is free of spot or blemish is to cut these people off. Starve their financial machines as much as you possibly can. Make sure that the facts of this case are disseminated. Put them on defense.
9. Finally, pray like mad for Jesus to bring about the judgment that they richly deserve for condemning the innocent & vindicating the guilty (Prov. 17:15, 1 Kings 8:32, 2 Chron. 6:23), so that the rest of the bystanders will see, fear God, & follow Him better (1 Tim. 5:20).
Related thoughts from a few days ago when this broke about not just MacArthur but the @CTmagazine scandal with Mark Galli. Has implications all over the place for other scandals including @RZIMhq, @BCS_MN, @hopeinGod, Driscoll, MacDonald, etc.
@CTmagazine@RZIMhq@BCS_MN@hopeinGod A friend reached out to me and mentioned that there's been personal strife between MacArthur and Duncan lately, so my original tweets weren't quite accurate. I was not aware of this and apologize for the confusion.
@johnmacarthur@Ligonier There's a significant correction at the bottom of this thread but I'll link to it here as well. Apparently Lig Duncan and GCC/Mac are estranged to some degree over (you guessed it) "social justice issues":
Another example of this was the way the #OPC Session responded to and addressed the issues raised by @aimeebyrdPYW during the #GenevaCommons / #RFBMW fight. Aimee had worked in and through New Hope and the local mechanisms to have it addressed...
But it wasn't until some of the key players involved took shots at the Session / Presbytery that the disciplinary charges were seriously addressed and even then the things said about Byrd, Green Miller and @vhobbs5 were sidestepped in favor of....defending the OPC leadership.
The question is valid - "who is the SBC". The answers is (according to at least one SBC Executive Committee member) is "the Bubbas and the Bucks". That was in the letter from @drmoore that was leaked a few months back.
Smug arrogance is right on brand for players, powers and principalities, especially when they're on "god's side" (Ephesians 6:12).
And yes, @TomBuck, you investigate everything and everyone. It's because the truth that sets you free, not PR, lies, obfuscation, and spin. @freedomsbride already knows that. Why don't you?
As a pastor you ought to be familiar with this passage:
Going to retweet some of the New Yorker article with parts that stuck out to me as it illustrates why I started questioning complementarianism and eventually decided this whole debate is fit only for the trash can.
This will be a thread, and probably a long one. 01/?
"For a time, Barr fell under the sway of an abusive boyfriend, who, while menacing her, spat Scripture demanding her submission. The fact that she couldn’t question him made it harder to see the abuse for what it was."
02/?
The first time I ever felt called on to use counseling training was when a young woman I worked with confided in me that her then-boyfriend was mentally, verbally, and socially cruel to her. Neither were saved, but I realized "complementarianism" had no category for this. 03/?
”The City of God does not prompt isolationism but the perspective necessary to seek the repair of an inevitably fragile thing. He encouraged the church to neither despair nor place ultimate hopes in the empire... (1/3)
The present political turmoil is neither a sign of the end times nor a justification for withdrawal from the world...The city of God and the earthly city are not synonymous with the church and “world,” rather they describe the 2 societies that make up all of God’s creation: (2/3)
those joined into a community by their mutual love of God (including believers currently alive and throughout history, and angels) and those joined into an alternate community by their misdirected love of self or temporal goods." -@KaitlynSchiess (3/3)
