The expression "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth" is well-known. But how many people understand it? | @darab_farooqui
#TheKashmirFiles
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui In this regard, #TheKashmirFiles falls short. Actually, it manipulates the truth, cherry-picks the truth, and exploits the truth emotionally. As a result, the film eventually devolves into a piece of pure vitriol and hatred.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui I believe this is propaganda rather than a genuine work of art or workmanship. Propaganda, by definition, is the spread of information – facts, arguments, speculations, half-truths, or outright lies – in order to sway public opinion.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui In 1990, according to the Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti, 357 Hindus were slain in Kashmir. By all accounts, many more Muslims have been slaughtered by militants. The topic of why these Muslims were slaughtered is never addressed in the film.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui There isn't a single mention of these hapless souls or the agony that their families had to go through.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui There isn't a single Muslim character in the film who is empathetic. Every single Muslim character is either deceitful or evil.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui Muslims are portrayed solely as murderers, lusting after women, advocating the killing of 'Kafirs', and refusing to sell Kashmiri Pandits goods.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui I'm not denying that didn't happen. However, there isn't a single Muslim with even a smidgen of humanity and all Muslims are shown as diabolical. This is not just improbable, but almost impossible.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui Imagine a film set in Kashmir that doesn't even include a single shot of an army truck. The sole military imagery in the film is of air force officers who are slain by militants at the beginning.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui Only the men of Kashmir Police are shown, and that too as cowards, but no army is visible. Why?
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui Simply showing an army convoy would have changed everything. It makes the problem seem less severe. It would have defeated the movie's purpose. The propaganda would be exposed as a sham.
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@darab_farooqui #TheKashmirFiles serves a purpose, and the purpose is propaganda.

Sometimes propaganda can feel like first love. It can be empowering; it can be addictive. | @Plebeian42
#TheKashmirFiles
thewire.in/film/as-a-film…
@Plebeian42 But unlike first love, propaganda happens again – and again and again.
thewire.in/film/as-a-film…
@Plebeian42 But if at all – in the country of Godi media, WhatsApp disinformation, and know-it-all uncles – you want some more propaganda, then head to the nearest theatre for #TheKashmirFiles.

thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@vivekagnihotri @bombaywallah When was the last time a prime minister spoke up so fulsomely about a film and lashed out against its critics?
thewire.in/film/the-kashm…
@vivekagnihotri @bombaywallah Chief ministers of many BJP states have given it tax exemptions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unhappy with the way Indian citizens have been living all these years. | @jahnavi_sen @1amnerd
thewire.in/government/nar…
@jahnavi_sen @1amnerd "The talk of rights, to some extent, for some time, may be right in a particular circumstance, but forgetting one's duties completely has played a huge role in keeping India weak."
thewire.in/government/nar…
@jahnavi_sen @1amnerd Everyone must "walk on the path of duty", he urged, if we really want to see the country achieve new heights.

"I work at persistent and have access to many of the docs you’ve shown in your share point screenshot. What’s the secure method to send it across to you?"

What happened after we broke the #TekFog story? | @onosmosis
@KaulAyushman

thewire.in/tekfog/en/4.ht…
@onosmosis @KaulAyushman A day after we published the first part of the story, we received an email from an individual using a Protonmail account who claimed to be a Persistent source and shared a Tor link to download files that were part of the company’s Sharepoint screenshots.

thewire.in/tekfog/en/4.ht…
@onosmosis @KaulAyushman We created a separate Linux server to download those files – which clocked in at 20 GB – in the background and went back to finalising the second and third parts of our story.

"Pegasus and TekFog are not related except that our assumption is that the same cast of bad characters have deployed both.

But they represent very different ends of the subversion spectrum." | @svaradarajan

@svaradarajan "Pegasus represents an attempt at passive surveillance, where the govt surreptitiously hacks into smartphones and installs spyware in order to listen to their conversations, in order to record what they're saying or even activate phone cameras..."

@svaradarajan "...and this is a means of gathering information, intelligence, in advance...it's passive gaming of the public sphere. TekFog represents a more active gaming, where the person deploying it, we have no doubt the footprints lead to the ruling party..."

What do you need to know about #YatiNarsinghanand?

A close relationship with @KapilMishra_IND, a massive reach on social media and backing by several inflammatory individuals on the far right keep the hate machine going.

thewire.in/communalism/be…
@KapilMishra_IND Why is it that #YatiNarsinghanand is left free to spread hatred? What explains the tolerance of the police to their open, continuous provocation of violence against a whole community? | wrote @alishan_jafri and @Apoorvanand__ in April last year.

@KapilMishra_IND @alishan_jafri @Apoorvanand__ In August last year, after the police allegedly refused to in file an FIR on complaints lodged against communal speeches made by far right leaders Yati Narsinghanand and Suraj Pal Amu, the Delhi court even asked for an action taken report. | @IsmatAraa
