I want to amplify concerns surrounding @ryanjespersen and want to address what happened recently on @RealTalkRJ as I also must take responsibility and own my part in supporting his platform in the past. (No longer.) Remove my segment on #RealTalkRJ please- see below.
1/15
This is a great🧵 on the train wreck of a 'discussion' on Real Talk that amounted to RJ silencing and demeaning @sarahhoyles
2/15
Here is what Sarah stated after RJ's attempt to save face:

3/15
During the show- RJ chose to stand in solidarity with problematic platforms like Captain Coby instead of addressing concerns raised by women. He put people at risk by name dropping a critic. He has done this before.

4/15
Criticism of men like Coby and RJ doesn't just happen because of just 1 instance of problematic behaviours. It happens because of patterns- repeated refusals to improve, listen, or address harm.

5/15
Coby has also shown that his recent apology was wholly-performative- see below. Coby also promoted the idea of reverse-racism, believing or insinuating that the criticism directed at him was because of his identity and not because of his appalling behaviours.

Re: "mean girls"
As pointed out by @bridgetstirling
There are attempts to dismiss valid critique on powerful men through the scapegoating of women- by labeling them and using misogyny to invalidate them.

7/15
Back to Real Talk- A quick search on twitter shows a trend for RJ. His panels tend to be 'manels' (all male panels)
He over-represents the voices of men. (More on that below)
He doesn't like being called out for it- keeps dismissing critiques, and yet it keeps happening.
8/15
Like when he publicly attacked @LiseGot
(For pointing out a manel) during a discussion re bias on university campuses...

9/15
Or here, on a segment re women in trades... all male panel.
10/15
And here, on a segment re Islamophobia, my colleague brought me on to discuss our work. RJ was asked by Dr. Muna Saleh about why he didn't include Black Hijabis instead- he claimed that he had tried- didn't hear back from '2 interview reqs' (1:28:10)

11/15
I applaud Pam & others withdrawing support. It seems to be the only way to get men to address bad behaviours- as no amount of words/ soft critique & no amount of evidence is ever enough. I echo @pamelamroach
& request my segment be removed also

13/15
There are many men with huge platforms, *UNWILLING* to manage their harms/ address their behaviours. No one is demanding perfection- they are demanding accountability and change. RJ has acknowledged concerns- ignorance isn't the issue. He is choosing to participate in harm.
14/15
As an added WTF:
How exactly are RJ and BRIAN JEAN (ye 'ol lake of fire?) The ones who "speak truth to power"
Maybe don't appropriate phrases like that when you spread misogyny and platform problematic people?
