Just wrapped up about a 25-minute chat with #Pitt AD Heather Lyke, largely about the future of the men’s basketball progfam.
Lyke said that retaining Jeff Capel was not a function of his buyout, and said that she and Capel are committed to rebuilding the program together.
Lyke also said that an extension for head football coach Pat Narduzzi is imminent.
Sounds like it’s done but they’re just waiting to make an announcement.
Lyke said that any potential changes to the basketball coaching staff will be decided on by Capel, and that she does not believe it’s an AD’s place to dictate staff changes to a head coach unless there is an issue of integrity.
Lyke acknowledged the fans have lost enthusiasm.
“When Jeff first came, there was a lot of positivity and infusion of energy and excitement and belief in what he’s building. That has not waned from me. It may have waned publicly, with fanbase, but it has not waned internally.”
Lyke cautioned against knee-jerk changes and pointed out how continuity has led to success with the football program.
“We all want immediate success. … The value of continuity is important and just changing for change’s sake is not necessarily the right decision at this time.”
