Long thread: Whom to follow on FinTwit for event-driven investing?

Sharing my list 👇 Feel free to add others.

15 names in total - sorted by the number of followers, so the yet-to-be-discovered gems are at the bottom of the list.

Obviously, following @investspecial is a must!
1/
@hkuppy - Kuppy focuses mostly on macro/special situation ideas with contrarian/inflection point twists. He publishes his musings on the entertaining Adventures in Capitalism. blog. A year ago he and the team also launched @kedm_com reports.
2/
You might’ve heard about the uranium squeeze thesis $SRUUF $CCJ $UEC
3/
@AndrewRangeley - Andrew is top-tier investment blogger and podcaster - all a part of YAVB empire. Most of the covered ideas either have an event-driven edge or are in media/cable/sports industries.
4/
Here is one of the recent ones on $HMHC - an interesting setup with an expected higher bid.
5/
@puppyeh1 - Jeremy offers original and high-quality research on his blog. His Twitter feed is also full of insightful and funny snippets.
6/
Might wanna check out this recent idea dump posts - a nice hunting place.
7/
@ArtkoCapital - US-based microcap/special situations fund. On this list mostly for their insightful quarterly newsletters that often cover the names I follow as well.
8/
Recent partner letter included $CURN - their most bullish investment and also one of the cases published on SSI.
9/
@alluvialcapital - Dave’s bread and butter is mostly nano-cap listings with limited reporting. He is really into the undiscovered ideas from the edges of the market. Both the blog and investor letters are top-notch.
10/
Some of the stuff covered by Dave you just won’t be able to find anywhere else, e.g. this $WFC $WFCNP little preferreds case:
11/
@AlphaVulture - Hielko runs one of the first blogs I started to follow. Focus is mostly on various special situation opportunities. Exceptional track record - 10 years compounding at 30%.
12/
One of the recent cases was privatization of $NFH.
13/
@Investmentideen - in his blog and Twitter Paul covers quirky and less-known investment cases in UK as well as US microcaps, usually with a special situations angle.
14/
An interesting re-rate thesis from Paul on $GEE (still actionable).
15/
@stockspinoffss - Rich runs a blog/newsletter with a focus on spin-off tracking and research. He also shares in depth reports on other event-driven opportunities.
16/
A nice recent win with $BBXIA - we also had the position, but exited way way too early.
17/
@AsifSuria - Asif is the man behind Inside Arbitrage - a great service and tool to track US merger arbitrage and insider trading activities, along with insightful reports on specific cases.
18/
Interesting recent highlight on $IAA - insider Peter Kamin had a very well timed spree of sizable purchases right after the stock dropped 20%+ after Q4 results. The CEO started buying as well.
19/
@ValueSituations - Conor has a top quality blog with weekly updates. The focus tends to be on, but is not exclusive to, UK and Irish names. Conor also shares his thoughts on multiple other subjects and macro-related themes.
20/
Insightful investment case and updates on $HBRN.
21/
@Valuedontlie lots of great content to scan though both on Twitter and on the blog. Ideas range from occasional special situation posts to a plethora of quick value ideas (those are free!). Cannot deny the educational “gains” here too.
22/
Loved this $ALJJ thesis (still actionable).
23/
@BuffaloBillCo - great investment insights with special situation angles. From time to time covers various broader/macro stats, which are useful as well.
24/
Really enjoyed his prolonged coverage and thoughts on $ASTL.
25/
@memyselfandi006 - one of the very first bloggers I started to follow ten years ago. Still captivating. Focuses on European names, themes and event-driven opportunities.
26/
Love these “Some Links” posts - always a very good selection of articles worth reading.
27/
@thewritser - Writser has a nose for lucrative special situations and his insights are always of top value. Occasionally shares quite undiscovered ideas.
28/
For example, $VEG takeover idea would’ve completely missed my radar otherwise.
29/
@uv_shares - Swen’s newsletter and in-depth reports are a great read. His blog just became much more active recently.
30/
Highlighting Swen’s recent win in $MNZS.
31/
And the final one is of course @InvestSpecial - the least discovered source for event-driven investing.

How to invest in Merger Arbitrage?

Over the last 5 years:
👉 241 M&A cases analyzed and posted on SSI.
👉 Win rate of 79%.
👉 Average IRR at 35%+.
👉 Average holding period 2.6 months.

How did we achieve this?

A detailed guide in the thread below 👇 Image

To make it easier we compiled a checklist identifying the most important questions to ask when analyzing any merger situation.

In a sense, merger arbitrage is the same value investing, just with a short-term catalyst - understanding the business case, valuation of the target, the strategic rationale as well as buyers' motivation for the merger are all vitally important.

Not so brief history of SSI and me.

After 7.5 years at specialsituationinvestments.com with a handle Dt, it is probably way past the introductions. But not too late for some recent history.

Kicking it off with a couple notes on my background.
1/ In my early days, I did some exciting entrepreneurial stuff such as founding a furniture import business in London and launching the first online car insurance brokerage in Lithuania.
2/ My finance ‘career’ took off during the GFC. It was tough - no one was hiring and everyone wanted to be hired.
