5,279 Children were Strip Searched by the Met Police in London in the past three years (that's five every single day.)

THREE QUARTERS of them were from ethnically diverse backgrounds

Just under half were black

Only 22% were white 🧵

The Met's already under pressure over its use of the tactic, after a damning report found racism was a factor in a 15-year-old girl, "Child Q", being strip searched while on her period at her school in Hackney, without an appropriate adult in the room.
Shadow Policing Minister @LabourSJ says strip search on children should only be used in 'exceptional' circumstances when lives are at risk.

As for the racial disparities, she calls that "wrong, on a basic human rights equality front."
For this story I’ve heard from teens at the @4FrontProject in North London who were strip searched as children:

“Degraded”

“Humiliated”

“I felt like dirt to be honest, like they were stepping all over me.”

60% of their members have been strip searched more than once
@TemiMwale is Director of the 4Front Youth Empowerment Project. She believes strip searches should be banned on children.

"Black children are not given the same chance of childhood, protection, care and safety."
In a statement, the Met Police make it clear that there are times when they need to strip search "to prevent harm to children."
The figures I've uncovered show 5,279 children were strip searched AFTER an arrest in London in 3 yrs.

But you don't have to have been arrested to be strip searched - #ChildQ wasn't. So she wouldn't even show up on these figures.

The real numbers will be even higher...
Oh, and for those questioning the maths. Recent ONS data found white people make up 58% of the population in London.

Yet white children were just 22% of the Met Police strip searches.

This is Tanya and Richard Spinks. She's Ukrainian, he's a Brit, and they both live in Lviv.

On Tuesday, she got an email from the Home Office telling her to go to a visa appointment 500 miles away in *Kyiv*

- to an office that's closed. @LBC
@LBC The booking for an appointment to take her biometrics was made on 18th February - for Wednesday 9th March.

The site has since closed, and they eventually managed to get out to Poland.

But on the 8th they were staggered to get a follow-up email, reminding them to go to Kyiv.
Richard Spinks told me it's "beyond incomprehensible."

To think of anyone else receiving this email potentially now "struggling through a war zone, past Russians, to get to an appointment that doesn't exist."

Fire in a high rise on Whitechapel High Street. London Fire say ten engines & 70 firefighters are at the scene. They’re asking people to avoid the area if possible
Now 100 firefighters are tackling this blaze in Aldgate. You can see external parts of the building flying off as the flames spread. Praying everyone is ok
Now, Sadiq Khan says 20 fire engines and more than 125 firefighters are working to tackle the fire at the block of flats and offices. It's the Relay Building, also home to Houblon Apartments

Minister James Cleverly says the Govt carries "as a badge of honour" Putin's criticism of London's sanctions against Russia @LBC
@LBC "We are limiting his ability to wage war" - James Cleverly says the sanctions against Russia are hitting the country's economy
France 🇫🇷 says our 🇬🇧 asylum programme is 'inhumane' for turning Ukrainians away at the border.

But James Cleverly defends the record: "We've had to create a system from scratch. It will take a little time to get the system up and running, that system is now there." @LBC

NEW: the police watchdog has slammed 'disgraceful' sexist, bullying, racist behaviour uncovered by officers based mostly at Charing Cross police station.

The killer line - "We believe these incidents are not isolated or simply the behaviour of a few ‘bad apples’." @LBC
This is some of what the nine independent investigations into officers (mostly PCs) found
Simply, horrifyingly, staggering.

The police watchdog found evidence that Met offices, among other things:

💥"Went to a festival dressed as known sex offenders and a molested child"
💥Sent homophobic messages
💥One officer sent a message saying "I would happily rape you"

Sue Gray’s stripped back report still finds “some of the behaviour surrounding these gatherings is difficult to justify.”

Some of the parties “should not have been allowed to take place.”

Full report here assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
Ultimately, as expected, Sue Gray has gone into very little detail thanks to the Met Police’s last minute request.

But she does find “failures of leadership and judgment by different parts of No 10 and the Cabinet Office at different times.” 🔥
And how’s this for a final line on which to end the long awaited Sue Gray report

“This does not need to wait for the police investigation to be concluded.”

“I’m crapping myself this morning, and I feel like crying.”

Oliver is one of nine Insulate Britain activists at the High Court this morning for breaching injunctions by blocking motorways. He tells me he’s expecting a custodial sentence. @LBC
Nine Insulate Britain defendants are due before the High Court Judge this morning.

The hearing is booked to last three days but they have little legal representation, and tell me they will admit to breaching the injunction - so it could be over much sooner. @LBC
Hearing begun. Myriam Stacey QC representing National Highways.

The 9 Insulate Britain activists all took part in a protest on the M25 on the 8th October where they blocked J25 Waltham Cross. That was two weeks after the Injunction had been granted @LBC
