99% of agency owners have NO IDEA how to demand greatness from their team
Its a hidden skill that separates the founders that build 7 figure agencies
and 8 figure agencies
fortunately, I studied this at Amazon
and got it here for you
(thread) 🧵
First off, when it comes to demanding greatness, I mean DEMAND
I wrote a short tweet on this recently and someone said they disagreed
They mentioned how they thought a leader should ask politely when requesting items from team members
this is EXACTLY MY POINT
Im not saying be a d*ck
but the greats dont accept anything short of extraordinary
and thats what you need to become, extraordinary
so, were going to start off with how you can cultivate this in your agency
then translate how to disseminate this into your communication style
greatness always starts with an idea
facts
no one became great by accident
in terms of your agency, this boils down to your MVP
Mission
Vision
Purpose
Here is my interpretation of what these three things are
Mission- short term BIG goal
Vision- the BIG HAIRY AUDCIOUS GOAL
Purpose- Why we exist , the core of everything we do
Here are mine
Mission- help 1000 agency owners remove themselves from their day to day operations
Vision- Empower 1M founders to build 7 &8 figure businesses using our frameworks on management & culture
Purpose- To change the way the world works. We exist to make the work place (virtual and physical) an extraordinary experience for everyone (and such that by doing so, raise the level of energy for everyone we impact)
I am not playing this game to get rich
that will naturally happen by the amount of value I add to the marketplace
but at my core, I truly believe I am here to help drive massive change
because that is my belief, and that is at the core of why 8F exists, nothing short of greatness will suffice for me
If you arent down to do something great or be part of something great
dont join us
we dont want you
the core of everything we do is impact
Now
When you have a strong MVP
one that the founder truly believes in (and in turn, the team)
Demanding greatness becomes easy
Here is a real example from a new trainee and I
Two weeks ago, the trainee asked me to link up with him once a month to audit our systems and come up with improvements
my initial reaction was 😤
Hell to the no
We exchanged voice notes and here is what I shared with him
"I appreciate your desire to want to improve our business, but just like we say with our clients, "see a problem, solve a problem"
I need that from you
If were going to accomplish our goals, you should be solving problems on the go and telling me about them later"
Lets break this down
first, I acknowledged this persons intentions
Assuming positive intent is a critical principle of great management
this guys intentions were great
But using my time to solve a problem hes capable of, not so great
second, i anchored him to a principle we teach
see a problem, solve a problem
This is a mantra we encourage all of our agencies to adopt
I anchored him on what 'great looks like' which was:
not coming to me to solve a problem with him
but to find problems & solve them
third, i told him i NEEDED that level of work from him
i didnt ask for it
i said i needed it
I demanded greatness
there are times to push on the gas
and times to be polite and ask for something
I know this guy is full of potential
and reminded him of what we need
Fouth, I explained the why
Whenever I ask for anything, especially when Im making a demand of a team member
I explain the why
"If were going to accomplish our goals, you should be solving problems on the go and telling me about them later"
he knows what our goals are
this guy is all about them
he wants to be on a winning team
he wants to do something great
so by tying in the why here & backing that up with how lofty our goals were, it made sense
Point being
There are times to be a polite manager/founder
and there are times to demand greatness (in a way without being a d*ck)
if you dont know how to do the later, your team will never reach their potential
Once a quarter (minimum), agencies have the opportunity to upsell their clients
Most don’t have a process for this
And
Don’t know how to do this
This ish is so simple
Here is how to crush your client meeting
So you can
Upsell clients
And
Increase LTV
🧵
When you reach a landmark point in your relationship with your client (end of month 2-3 or end of a project), you have a great opportunity to upsell/down sell/cross sell or deepen your position with your client
There are 5 things you should do to crush this process 👇
1 Set the agenda (you should set an agenda for every meeting always)
