In a bizarre speech on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared the world’s reaction to his invasion of Ukraine to the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, saying they are both experiencing 'cancel culture.'
Putin said in his speech, 'They recently canceled the children’s author [J.K.] Rowling because she …. didn’t satisfy fans of so-called gender freedoms.' He went on to say about Russia: 'They are now trying to cancel our whole 1,000-year-old country, our people.'
Rowling has been widely criticized in recent years for her stance on gender and the transgender community.
She tweeted in response to Putin’s speech: 'Critiques of Western cancel culture are possibly not best made by those currently slaughtering civilians for the crime of resistance, or who jail and poison their critics. #IStandWithUkraine.'

Films starring Keanu Reeves have been taken down from Chinese domestic streaming platforms like Tencent Video and iQiyi, following his appearance in a concert for Tibet organized by a nonprofit founded by the Dalai Lama.
Beijing strongly rejects any claims of Tibetan independence and views the Nobel Peace Prize laureate as a dangerous 'separatist.'
According to the LA Times, at least 19 films including 'The Matrix' trilogy, 'Speed,' 'Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,' and more were removed from the Chinese streaming platforms.

Text messages between Virginia 'Ginni' Thomas, a conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and then-President Donald Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows reveal her efforts to reverse the 2020 presidential election results.
The 29 texts between the pair, which were sent in the days following Joe Biden’s victory, were first reported by the Washington Post and CBS News.
They numbered among the 2,320 text messages Meadows turned over to the House select committee investigating the Jan 6 riot on the U.S. Capitol.

A male birth control pill is set to go into human clinical trials this year, after showing tremendous effectiveness in male mice.
The pill, which was developed by researchers from the University of Minnesota, reportedly works by targeting the user’s RAR-α gene, which reduces their ability to produce the vitamin A levels necessary for fertility.
According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, vitamin A 'plays important roles in cell growth, differentiation (including sperm formation) and embryonic development.'

It’s been 20 years since Halle Berry became the first Black woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in ‘Monster’s Ball.’
In her 2002 acceptance speech, Berry dedicated her win to every ‘faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.’
Unfortunately, two decades later she still remains the only Black woman to have won that award. In fact, it took another 8 years after her win for another Black performer to even be nominated in that category, Gabourey Sidibe for ‘Precious.’

Microplastics as small as 0.0007 mm have been detected running through human veins.
A new study published in Environment International found a quantifiable amount of microplastics in 17 of 22 human subjects, meaning 77% of the people tested had some form of plastic in their blood.
The most commonly found plastic of the 5 different types researchers tested for was PET, the plastic used frequently for disposable drink bottles, or even clothing, where you might have seen it called polyester.

Researchers at UCLA have released their annual ‘Hollywood Diversity Report,’ which analyzes 252 English-language films released in a given year across a number of racial and gender lines.
One of the most interesting findings from 2021’s report is that moviegoers of color made up a majority of open weekend box office ticket sales in 6 of the 10 highest-grossing theatrical releases last year—despite only 3 of the films having a BIPOC lead in its cast.
And with 2021’s top film, ‘Spider Man: No Way Home’—the only 2021 movie to gross more than $1 billion globally—movie fans of color made up 60% of the overall audience.
