Morning everyone. Something a bit different for #TwitterBirdsong today. With spring really getting going, here are ten birds to listen out for. #TenBirds
1. Blackbird. Rich and varied and probably standing on top of a tree near you right now, singing its heart out.

2. Robin. Silvery flutings with gaps. You'll hear it at any time of day, but if you hear a bird singing after dark, it is most likely a robin.

3. Great tit. Yes, it's the 'tea-cher!' bird, but listen out for the many variations: 'tea-cher-cher', 'tea-tea-cher', 'tea-CHER' and so on. aka 'tiny foot pump'.

4. Blue tit. Pugnacious, active. Two (sometimes more) slower notes then several faster ones. Again, variations are rife.

xeno-canto.org/122468 #TenBirds Small and quite fighty.
5. Wren. The Tiny Shouter. Tsib-a-tsab-a-tsoo-diddy-dabble-iddy-wodda-tsipp-a-brrrr-tsip-tsip-tsip-tsip-tsip-tsip-tsip—tjop-tsrrrrrrrrrrrrrr—ts’tjupp-tjupp-tjupp-tjupp.

xeno-canto.org/492792 #TenBirds Perky tail.
6. Dunnock. About three seconds of indeterminate scrabbling then silence. A little bit key-jangly.

7. Goldcrest. Tiny and impossibly sweet, it sings very very high and very fast. Tsee-bada tsee-bada tsee-bada tsee-bada scabba-diddle-oo.

xeno-canto.org/570588 #TenBirds Very tiny. Olive-coloured. ...
8. Chiffchaff. It says its name. Also beautifully described by @M_Z_Harrison as 'toddler with a glockenspiel'.

xeno-canto.org/246021 #TenBirds A pretty dull bird to look ...
9. Goldfinch. Jangling, chirruping, squeaking, whistling wind-up toy that never winds down.

xeno-canto.org/127381 #TenBirds The 'gold' is a bright yell...
10. Chaffinch. Medium-pacer coming in to bowl.

Other birds are obviously available, and if you live in a lighthouse it'll be a different ten, but you get the idea. All the birdsong is here. Have an excellent day. levparikian.com/index.php/twit…

May the Fourth be with you!

When I first learned that Taking Flight was to be published today, I had a decision to make. Sit in the corner grumping about 'that so-called "Star Wars Day"' or embrace it.

So here’s a thread of flying creatures in Star Wars.

First the disclaimers:
– I am not a Star Wars person. I’m not *not* a Star Wars person – I have seen some of them – but also I am not a 'Star Wars person'
– All creatures are taken from Wookieepedia
– They only qualify if they appear in the main film series
Aiwha
Massive winged cetaceans, native to the planet Kamino. Strong swimmers & flyers, they were also known as "air whales". They’re peaceful, majestic, and (sob) give out bleating cries when dying.
Given the space, I would happily adopt an aiwha. #StarWarsDay #TakingFlightBook An illustration of an Aiwha...

Morning everyone. Taking Flight is officially published today. If clicking on links is your thing, and if buying books is also your thing, then today is your lucky day. The cover is by Jo Walker. bit.ly/3kthp7C A copy of Taking Flight on ...
Taking Flight started with a realisation: flight is amazing and ridiculous and I didn’t really know anything about it.
So I started asking myself questions, writing down all the things I didn’t know.
There were a lot of them.
Then I started looking for answers.
Each answer spawned a new question, and soon I was:
– very confused
– very enthusiastic Arthur Shappey, a confused ...

The World Cup of National Birds of the Four Remaining Teams in the Football World Cup.

1. Argentina – Rufous hornero Small, rufous, standing on one leg, red of eye. Quite sweet,
2. Croatia – Common nightingale Another plain brown one, but at least this one is singing.
3. France – (Gallic) rooster Chunky chicken, with, quite frankly, a real hotchpotch of pl

Trashing a book in a book group is fine, btw. Part of the deal is bad reviews. But extrapolating a whole thing about the other part of my working life? wtf?
Why not have a go at my parenting while you're at it? Or my cooking perhaps?

Getting near the end of Round 2, and I continue to be delighted/astonished by the interest in it.
Not just the number of votes, but the level of investment in the idea of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ words.
“No no no no NO! Have people actually gone MAD?! ‘Flanglepliggledip’ is OBVIOUSLY better than ‘phlurm’, you IDIOTS!”
