May the Fourth be with you!

When I first learned that Taking Flight was to be published today, I had a decision to make. Sit in the corner grumping about 'that so-called "Star Wars Day"' or embrace it.

So here’s a thread of flying creatures in Star Wars.
#StarWarsDay A copy of Taking Flight on ... First the disclaimers:
– I am not a Star Wars person. I’m not *not* a Star Wars person – I have seen some of them – but also I am not a 'Star Wars person'
– All creatures are taken from Wookieepedia
– They only qualify if they appear in the main film series

Morning everyone. Taking Flight is officially published today. If clicking on links is your thing, and if buying books is also your thing, then today is your lucky day. The cover is by Jo Walker. bit.ly/3kthp7C A copy of Taking Flight on ... Taking Flight started with a realisation: flight is amazing and ridiculous and I didn’t really know anything about it.
So I started asking myself questions, writing down all the things I didn’t know.
There were a lot of them.
Then I started looking for answers.

The World Cup of National Birds of the Four Remaining Teams in the Football World Cup.

1. Argentina – Rufous hornero Small, rufous, standing on one leg, red of eye. Quite sweet, 2. Croatia – Common nightingale Another plain brown one, but at least this one is singing.

Getting near the end of Round 2, and I continue to be delighted/astonished by the interest in it. Not just the number of votes, but the level of investment in the idea of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ words.

Bird migration is incredible. This site shows you their journeys.

The robin is one example. Here are blackbird movements. Map of Europe, as before. A blizzard of lines and dots prett

A thread, about the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. I saw this tweet yesterday. It's a lovely tweet, from one brother to another, sharing a memory of their father.

Afternoon everyone. For today's #TwitterBirdsong, shall we do Seven Woodland Birds To Listen For?

Yes. Let's. 1. Nuthatch. And already the 'Seven Birds' thing is ruined, because the nuthatch makes enough sounds for about ten different species. Here's one of the common ones. xeno-canto.org/235146 Pastel shades: peach on chest, blue/grey on back. Black eyes

Morning everyone. Following on from yesterday’s Ten Birds, today let’s just have five.

Five birds that go ‘coo’. #FiveBirds The first and most obvious cooer is the familiar (and much reviled) feral pigeon. Its common sound is a low-level clucking coo. xeno-canto.org/460854 #FiveBirds Standing there literally six inches from the camera. It’s

Prompted by a couple of replies, I downloaded and tested the BirdNet birdsong recognition app today. Some thoughts. (1/23,476) I am a bit of an old fart, by which I mean I reckon it’s more fun learning the birdsong for yourself than having an app hand you the answer on a plate.

Morning everyone. Something a bit different for #TwitterBirdsong today. With spring really getting going, here are ten birds to listen out for. #TenBirds 1. Blackbird. Rich and varied and probably standing on top of a tree near you right now, singing its heart out.

Morning everyone. Today is Day 61 of #TwitterBirdsong (never mind that yesterday I also said it was Day 61 – that was wrong and I am an idiot but ANYWAY).

Today's bird is a proper good 'un, a bird of great charm. Every sighting is a treat. Say hello to the dipper.

Ok, so summer’s definitely done now, and a lot of our favourite birds have already left for Africa, or will be on their way very soon. SOB. But fret not. They’ll be replaced by some equally gorgeous and fascinating winter visitors. HURRAH.

Evening. A short thread (don't worry – it contains no opinions, politics, hard takes, deep thinking or unlikely and amazing coincidences. It's just a load of nature photos.) I went for a long walk today – 20 miles. This in preparation for an even longer walk I'm doing next week. A source close to our cat has confirmed that the cat intends to reject the food currently on offer in the bowl, even though it originally indicated it wanted ‘food’. ‘This isn’t the food the cat asked for, or if it is, it’s suddenly disgusting for some reason,’ said a spokescat. ‘The cat will continue to hold entirely unrealistic and unpredictable expectations for food, based on its own, purely arbitrary definition of ‘food’.’
