Nice chat with @christines1s0s this afternoon –

We finished by discussing:

How do you find new people to have coffee chats with?

🧢🐈 1/8
➣ Practically Leading - Discord server

In my Practically Leading Discord, our most active channel is: coffee-chats

People have been sharing and collaborating about coffee chats daily.

discord.gg/ghdjvEZfDM 2/8
➣ Here To Help website

People that are open to helping others (via DM or Coffee Chats) have added themselves to Here To Help.

Feel free to grab time on their Calendly or DM them to request some time:

heretohelp.social 3/8
➣ Soliciting for referrals

Many have asked others on #100Devs who else is good to reach out for coffee chats.

Many have taken that approach to network and get recommendations. 4/8
➣ Searching Twitter

You can do pretty well to find who has been active with coffee chats by searching Twitter with quotes:

"Coffee Chat"

Maybe include a date filter as well:

twitter.com/search?q=%22Co… 5/8
➣ Join like-minded Twitter Communities

@carolina_elc_io runs an Accountability Buddy group: twitter.com/i/communities/…

@StephanyaCodes runs the Here To Help Twitter Spaces, and helps manage our group: twitter.com/i/communities/…

Many in those would love to meet up. 6/8
➣ Join VirtualCoffeeIO

The @VirtualCoffeeIO is linked to a website and group that organizes group coffee chats weekly:

virtualcoffee.io 7/8
➣ Ask for recommendations & suggest follow-ups

It's always good to close out a coffee chat properly:

β€’ Ask the other person who else they might recommend meeting
β€’ Hint whether you'd be open to meeting again
β€’ Discuss any follow-ups with them or others 8/8

How I study for interviews

🧢🐈 1/7
1. List out talking points

Create a set of bullet points of each topic you want to cover.

Tailor to the company and job description. 2/7
2. Rehearse the talking points

Read word-for-word at first, aloud, until you feel comfortable.

Ideally record yourself with e.g. Quicktime or @CaptoForMac. 3/7

Lovely coffee chat with @jenanemone today πŸ’›

We covered a lot of ground, I may do a few tweets after that conversation.

First topic:

Listing less experienced skills on your resume

🧢🐈 1/4
➣ DO list lesser known skills

Your resume needs to make it past ATS screening, automated or manual keyword searches.

Include whatever you have experience in. 2/4
➣ DON'T oversell yourself

Don't get caught in a "lie".

If you act as if you are highly experienced in a skill, and the interviewer finds you aren't, they might question your other skills.

If you show you're "experimenting", they know what to expect. 3/4 Image

Are you interviewing for a software engineer role?
Are you worried about paired programming exercises?

Here's what I look for in candidates during these exercises πŸ‘‡
- How are you communicating your thoughts
- How clear is your communication
- How friendly are you, would the team enjoy working with you
- How much do you contribute ideas, and how receptive are you to feedback or new ideas
- Did you ask clarifying questions and made sure you understood the problem
- Did you come up with test cases or unit tests
- How natural does coding come to you
- How much do you have to Google, and how quickly were you able to find what you were looking for
