BREAKING: 🇺🇳 Human Rights Council adopts resolution creating an international accountability mechanism on #Nicaragua. #HRC49

20 votes in favor, 7 against, and 20 abstentions.

This is a major development, for several reasons: 🧵

The resolution creates a 'Group of (three) Human Rights Experts' (GHRE) mandated to:
➡️ investigate serious human rights violations since 2018
➡️ identify perpetrators
➡️ preserve and collect evidence
➡️ provide recommendations to #Nicaragua

Very importantly, in doing so, the Group of Human Rights Experts will look at:
➡️ structural causes of violations
➡️ intersectional forms of discrimination
➡️ gender dimensions of the violations

It will present a full report to the Human Rights Council in March 2023.

The creation of this international mechanism on #Nicaragua, as called for by the Colectivo 46/2 (a coalition of local and intl NGOs) responds to the country's major human rights crisis, by paving the way for future accountability processes.

Her monitoring mandate, and the Group of Expert's investigative mandate, are both necessary, and complementary.
