Remember when reporting on the #conversiontherapy ban that: 1. Many trans people are lgbq and attempting to change their sexual orientation would be easily hidden in gender conversion "therapy"
2. Lots of cis lgbq people are gender nonconforming and attempts to make them straight are also easily disguised as attempts to prevent them becoming trans *even if they were never likely to be trans*
3. "Conversion Therapy" or sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts are OLDER than the idea of sexuality and gender identity being different things (cont'd)
The people who designed the early conversion therapies viewed both gay and transgender people as broadly the same thing, as "regrettable" outcomes (cont'd)
And as possible futures to save feminine boys and masculine girls from.
Many modern conversion therapies also treat gender nonconformity as "pre-homosexual" as well as pre-transgender (cont'd)
Some just now see making a gender conforming gay person as a "better" outcome than a trans person if they can't make someone straight
3. So while we of course need to know more details, it's looking like this ban would not be helpful to any lgb person who is gender nonconforming or trans
The idea that *only* parents raise children is obviously false. The idea that only parents *should* raise children is a very new, very White, very ahistorical.
This tweet is from a homophobic, transphobic person replying to a gay man saying that being openly lgbtq isn't "grooming children".
Children are taught and nurtured and raised by a whole load of adults around them. Their parents aren't and shouldn't be the ultimate arbiters of what the child learns or knows
