If you're not being adequately compensated for your hard work, your career is likely to feel frustrating at best, and unfulfilling at worst.

But is there anything you can do about it? Yes! Improved compensation is one of the most important benefits of career advancement for many

7 years ago, I was wearing my uniform as a color salesperson at Sephora. I was in graduate school, a few days away from 30 yrs, singularly single and had less than 500 CAD to my name every first day of the month after paying my rent😃. I was sharing a basement apartment with two
other students and my landlords were these nice couple who are my age-mate and had their lives together. Oh, how I looked at them and their cute little family with admiration daily asking “God when”.

Those days were rough, graduate school dealt with me.
I had just had a failed animal trial: my experimental rats died and I was having many nights spent at the Canadian Light Source where I collected data.

Oh, serious imposter syndrome, my graduate funding was running out (I had one year to graduate and our funding will run out

One of the hardest decision I have had to make is to turn down a LOVE that came at the WRONG TIME.

I met a guy back in Finland. We were both students by day and cleaners by night. But he was madly in love with me. You could tell him anything about me and he would still love me
Suddenly, I got a PhD admission and full funding in Canada! And it became clear that I was going to move to Canada and leave him behind. Guess what? He proposed! Chei! What was I supposed to do when I know he could kill himself if I said no. Well, I said yes.
But made it clear, I am going to Canada and going alone! If you want me, get yourself to Canada by school or any other method 😃. I am not staying back to marry and have kids while we would both be cleaners and be madly poor and madly in love.

Exactly 4 years ago today, I became the FIRST BLACK PERSON to obtain a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from @usask 🎉. The world met me, we went viral everywhere and my life has not remained the same. Let’s remember my famous write up together. Can you see what 4 years can do?
As the 5th child of 5, I always had to wait for my turn. I was the last, a girl child and raised by a mother who is farmer and a father who has little, hawked pepper on the streets of Ibadan as early as age 10 to help my mum. Went to public primary and secondary school in Ibadan.
Attended OOU and studied Physics. Because I had a 2.1, it opened the door for me to proceed to Finland for a Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering. During this masters degree, I worked part-time as a cleaner and did this after my Masters as well. Out of determination,

1/ Need to get paid more? Read this and RT 🙏🏿

So, you are at this job and realized you were low-balled when you got hired. Or your job descriptions have changed a lot and you are now doing the work of a more senior person. Image
2/ You have now approached your manager for a raise or a renegotiation and it looks like you are asking for too much. Come sit with me, let’s plan your strategic upward mobility. Let me tell you what will happen. Your manager will offer you a promotion (if you are truly worth it)
3/ and the pay will only go up by a little amount (remember you were lowballed at first and any promotion only adds to what you started from). I know, you are angry as this isn’t your market worth and you still feel underpaid and can’t negotiate your way to the salary you want.
