To everyone who left Africa in August / September to start a new life in another part of the world, well done but this is just the beginning of the journey. From someone who #Japa in 2008, here are some of my words to you:
✅ Get your regularization papers asap - health card
identity card, social security card, school ID card, driver’s license, open a bank account, deposit all of your money and get a bank card
✅ You need both the people from your continents (Africans abroad) and the locals of your new country. So, start building those

If you're not being adequately compensated for your hard work, your career is likely to feel frustrating at best, and unfulfilling at worst.
But is there anything you can do about it? Yes! Improved compensation is one of the most important benefits of career advancement for many
professionals. To get the most out of your work, it's important to take a strategic approach to seek out other higher-paying opportunities. The best way to do this is not to go to every nook and cranny of the internet applying for every job position that is available but to align

7 years ago, I was wearing my uniform as a color salesperson at Sephora. I was in graduate school, a few days away from 30 yrs, singularly single and had less than 500 CAD to my name every first day of the month after paying my rent😃. I was sharing a basement apartment with two
other students and my landlords were these nice couple who are my age-mate and had their lives together. Oh, how I looked at them and their cute little family with admiration daily asking “God when”.
Those days were rough, graduate school dealt with me.

One of the hardest decision I have had to make is to turn down a LOVE that came at the WRONG TIME.
I met a guy back in Finland. We were both students by day and cleaners by night. But he was madly in love with me. You could tell him anything about me and he would still love me
Suddenly, I got a PhD admission and full funding in Canada! And it became clear that I was going to move to Canada and leave him behind. Guess what? He proposed! Chei! What was I supposed to do when I know he could kill himself if I said no. Well, I said yes.

Exactly 4 years ago today, I became the FIRST BLACK PERSON to obtain a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from @usask 🎉. The world met me, we went viral everywhere and my life has not remained the same. Let’s remember my famous write up together. Can you see what 4 years can do?
As the 5th child of 5, I always had to wait for my turn. I was the last, a girl child and raised by a mother who is farmer and a father who has little, hawked pepper on the streets of Ibadan as early as age 10 to help my mum. Went to public primary and secondary school in Ibadan.

It’s the 9th Anniversary of my relocation to Canada 🇨🇦!
I was already living abroad (in Finland) when I suddenly decided I wanted more out of life (I was a cleaner with a Masters degree, not cool). I was done and ready to restart somewhere else. I wasn’t going to just survive
and I was ready to give it all it takes to thrive. I wouldn’t have done it without the zeal to take yet another risk. I again bet on myself and prayed to God for help. It’s been 9 amazing years of becoming
- A PhD holder in 3D-printing 🤩
- A Director in a Tech Company

I have a team of 5-6 volunteers who helps me with various things to keep the platforms running.
Volunteer one is coming to Canada fully funded!
He was responsible for sharing scholarships that we all enjoy on here. He researches the scholarships and make sure we post them.
So, he graduated from his MSc in the UK and returned back to Nigeria. I was panicking and sat tight to support. First we got internship in a reputable organization in Nigeria to keep body and soul together while we tackle Canada and the US for admissions.

For those asking whether you can get a GOOD JOB before landing in Canada.
When this madam became my client, she said I want a job with a-6-figure salary waiting for me before I move to Canada.
Me: let’s put in the work and see how it goes. Are you ready for assignments?
6 weeks later, 2 interviews from reputable places. These are not IT Roles. They are HR roles with 6 figures salary. I am also shocked but it is all possible!
If anyone tell you as a new immigrant or a recent graduate to settle for less, jump and pass their direction!

So, I got admitted into the UofS for a PhD in biomedical engineering with focus on synchrotron X-ray imaging and biomechanics in 2012. This was at the start of the 4th Industrial Revolution (began in 2011). And 9 months into the PhD program, I evaluated and couldn’t fit my
biomechanics major into any of the Industry 4.0 technologies & synchrotron x-rays seem to be a technology for the distant future. I was so worried and started looking at what else I could do (based on my background) that fits into any of the 140 technology swimlanes.

On the Making of a Modern Day Deborah.
I was singularly single for a while. I had bad relationships. I was a fixer. I went about just getting attracted to broken men and fixing them up. Then, they would dump me and go bring a lower girl and marry. I coordinated one’s thesis,
I housed a man and fed him 😂. I helped planned men’s careers. I was fixing them for other women 😓.
So, when I was in year 3 of my PhD, I got engaged to an emotionally abusive man. He told me my PhD was miniature and that I won’t amount to much. He asked me to quit and move

I used to live in Finland. If it is not better than I left it. Don’t go there! You deserve better!
I did cleaning job for 4.5 years and they won’t give us any other type of jobs! I could not collect samples from patients recruited for my study! Being black was my sin!
If anyone spill any jargons to cajole you to go to Finland, show them my tweet. Let them tell us it is not true.
I picked race o. I left and never looked back. Please o, let our hustle shine eye o. One chance abroad dey o. Don’t go and enter one chance o. I did once.

Did you know that similar to the Canadian PR Programs, the US also have a merit-based immigration system to grant you a Green Card based on National Interest? If you possess Advanced Degrees (Masters and PhDs), you may be able to migrate to the US as a Greencard holder 💃!
And this time, no IELTS required 👏🏾🙌🏿! And age restrictions may not be a big problem (amen to this).
This Sunday, I am bringing Dr. Ozi to come and help us break down this process: requirements, how to get started, best practices for your green card application and so on.

This girl here, she was a child that her parents didn’t want that came accidentally (my head is strong 😂), she was a pepper-seller, she was a cleaner, she was a salesgirl, she had a couple of failed relationship / engagements, she has regular impostor syndrome moments.
she still think she doesn’t speak enough good English, and she didn’t get married until her mid-thirties.
But, she never stopped dreaming, planning, praying and fighting for what she believes in. She understands the power of positioning and clarity is her last name.

Let’s talk about getting jobs (picture from LinkedIn)!
I know some of you are in my inbox getting pissed about losing jobs and not getting the type of jobs you deserve. Listen! Tech skills are the new gold!
One person here wrote to me last week who got a job within 3 weeks of landing in Canada as a data analytics specialist with a starting salary of 80K. He came to ask if he lowballed himself. Yes, he did but it’s not a bad place to start from.

You have heard me speak about Industry 4.0 and wondering how and where you fit in. Acceleration of time to market, product customization, service effectiveness has caused new business model creation.
.
Now, look critically at these 4 buckets (including you in Arts and Finance)
Ask yourself where you belong? Which area do you want to build a competitive advantage in? Some of you think I have extraordinary abilities? May be I do? 3D-printing is my extraordinary ability as this is my competitive advantage. Have you identified your competitive advantage?
