Greenwich Village to the west of the tracks was a hip artisty touristy expensive in place even then.
When the 3rd Ave tracks were demolished in 1956, the city & realtors hoped to "gentrify" the parts east of the track and attract a more upscale crowd to the area.

That part of #NYC didn't really have a designated name cos it was mostly tenements & poor people.
Realtors noticed many Greenwich Village artists starting to move into the eastern parts. And they thought of a great "branding" idea to sell that area as a result.

Hoping to piggyback the cool Bohemian cache of Greenwich Village, they decided to advertise the area east of 3rd Ave as "East Village". How we know the area now for decades.
Why to New Yorkers, "the village" means West Village. And East Village is a separate entity.
