I am a high-achieving WOC in academic medicine. I am almost 9 months postpartum. I had my annual physical with my PCP today. I confided that I felt everything was a bit dull/sad lately. I asked for advice on who I could talk to to feel more like myself. Here's what happened (🧵):
PCP said: "Not everything is like a baby commercial, things won't always be happy and clean. It'll get better."
PCP said: "You just have to realize that your life is a bit messier now. You can't give 100% to your job anymore. Try giving 75%."
PCP said: "Try exercising and getting more active outside now that the weather is better." (All things that I am actively pursuing and had just mentioned.)
When I asked if I could be referred to a therapist, PCP said: "It is SO hard to find a therapist right now, although telehealth makes it a little bit easier. It may be really difficult for you to talk to someone soon... that's why I recommend exercise."
I have the resources, knowledge, and ability to be able to look for my own support. But what if I didn't? What if I had come to my PCP, disclosed really sensitive and stigmatizing information, and walked out feeling like there was no hope/need for help soon #MentalHealthAwareness
What if I didn't speak English well or didn't have financial resources to pay for therapy? What if my family and friends weren't supportive of therapy? What if I was having harmful thoughts?

PCPs are the gatekeepers. My gatekeeper failed me today.

A #tweetorial on my latest publication 👇 with @mlipsitch, @yhgrad, and others.

When modeling STI spread some of the hardest parameters to find REAL and ACCURATE data on are sexual behavior parameters. In particular we have little info on HOW people choose their partners. (1/)
Most studies aiming to understand HOW people choose partners ask about preferences... but these answers can be biased - and so is the resulting info. So we sought to objectively observe partner selection in an online setting to inform partner selection in the real world. (2/)
Additionally, STI incidence rates among Black MSM in the US are higher than other racial/ethnic groups. Previous work hypothesized this is due to differences in sexual network composition of Black MSM. We aimed to observe preferences of Black MSM in online settings. (3/)
